Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee Begins To Tap Cash

Greg Giroux at CQ Politics reports that the DSCC leads the RSCC in cash on hand according to the most recent filings.

This decided edge was confirmed by reports recently filed with the Federal Election Commission, which covered receipts and expenditures for the month of April. The documents showed the DSCC had $32.5 million cash on hand as May began, compared to $17.1 million for the NRSC.

These figures were a sharp reversal of the situation at the same point in the 2004 election cycle, which ended with a four-seat net gain for the Republicans. At the end of April 2004, the NRSC had $16.5 million left to spend and the DSCC had $7.4 million.

The Democrats' big cash advantage is the result of their more deliberate spending patterns. The difference in overall funds raised is not nearly as gaping. The DSCC and NRSC both reported raising just more than $3 million in April. That gave the DSCC total receipts of $59.5 million for the 2005-06 cycle to $53.5 million for the NRSC

The reports yielded evidence that the Democratic operation is beginning to spend down some of its huge cash surplus.

The $2.7 million that the DSCC reported spending last month was the most that it has disbursed in any month since January 2005, the first month of this election cycle. The DSCC reported transferring $820,000 to Democratic organizations in states that are hosting highly competitive Senate races: Its single largest transfer was $189,500 to the Democratic Party in Montana, where Republican Sen. Conrad Burns appears highly vulnerable.

He goes on to list other candidates receiving recent transfers of funds and lists top donors to both the DSCC and RSCC.

Hey Lorie, might you think that the 'Not One More Dime' campaign might have some effect? Be interesting to know how the combination of SCC and individual senators cash positions were vis a vis both parties. Might be closer than we both think.

Just so, John. The "Not On... (Below threshold)

Just so, John. The "Not One Dime" campaign - combined with the actions of like-minded donors who never even heard of it - is the proximate cause of the RSCC's lagging in fundraising.

As evidence, note that the House GOP is well ahead of their Democratic counterpart, and the RNC has raised multiples of what the DNC has gathered.

We said, "Not One Dime" until all the judicial nominees had their vote, and we meant it.

A darned good thing, too, as the RSCC is sending money to help Lincoln Chaffee in his Republican Primary campaign. This is their policy; they helped Specter in '04, and others as well. Most of us would prefer our contributions to party orgs be used against the other party, not to influence intramural contests.

Yep, not one penny to the national organizations; what I give will be targeted to non-RINO's.

I keep telling the RNC and Melman they may as well stop sending the weekly letters. Not one dime will be sent to the national wimps. I'm in Va and i'll be da**ed if i'll let Warner get hold of even one cent of my money. I'll also support the democratic opponent of several RINO's. If the Rino's can stand to lose their jobs (and lots of them will) i can stand to live with another criminal Clinton in the White House for a short while. I figure the country will collapse within months of a democratic takeover since 90% of them have been identified as criminals in the past few months. Are you ready for an all out war in this country, it's coming to your neighborhood soon, thanks to the lefties and RINO's that ignore the public?

The Senate is far less resp... (Below threshold)

The Senate is far less responsive to the will of the voters (their employers) than the House, simply because the House is always having to account for themselves.

To predict all-out war may seem a bit extreme but I'm nearly 64 years old and I have never seen the political climate this poisonous. I place a huge amount of the blame on Stephanoupoulos and even more so, James Carville. They were responsible for the most rancourous, venomous and divisive political climate this country has ever seen and it doesn't seem to be abating as it should!

My only objection to throwing out offensive RINO Senators is that we are then stuck for 6 years with something even worse - at least 90% of the time! So I say, stick with the RINO you know but make really, really sure that that RINO knows you only voted for him in spite of his views and keep reminding him - weekly if you must - that he/she is on short tether in your mind. If enough of us do that consistently, we might be able to force them to pay attention.

Meanwhile, start looking around for acceptable, electable replacements the next time Bozo 1 is up for re-election.
