Nicaragua Presidential Election

Leftist and Hugo Chavez ally Daniel Ortega has his best chance in the last decade of returning to power in Nicaragua. This would be a large setback in Latin America, as the more conservative canidate has won elections in Mexico, Peru, and Columbia in the past few months.

Ortega only has a chance be... (Below threshold)
Adjoran:

Ortega only has a chance because the opposition is split this year. He won't get any more than the 40% he has drawn in the past - BUT changes in the law enacted by Sandanistas {who hold a disproportionate power in Parliment} would allow a winner with {you guessed it!} 40% without a runoff.

Interestingly enough, the main other candidate, Montealegre, invoked the spirit of Ronald Reagan openly and repeatedly. Anti-Marxist, and pro free trade . . .

Nicaragua has the second-lowest per capita income in the hemisphere, higher only than Haiti. If Ortega wins, they will undoubtably crash below that level.

He hasn't won, yet, though. While most voters are too young to remember Ortega in power, they are old enough to have witnessed the rampant corruption of Ortega and his party.
