For years considered a competitive district, as FoxNews reported last month, national Republicans have abandoned hopes of unseating Democratic incumbent John Salazar. Tipton himself believes the NRCCC is focused on protecting incumbents - and he is undoubtably correct, since the organization is controlled by the incumbent Republican House members. It is probably a foolish strategy to put all your hopes on defense, though.
Tipton has some in-state help from Rep. Tom Tancredo, as The Daily Sentinel reports HERE:
U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., on Thursday endorsed fellow Republican Scott Tipton for the 3rd Congressional District, saying Tipton would be a reliable vote for border security.
Tipton is a Cortez businessman bidding to unseat Democrat U.S. Rep. John Salazar in the Western Slope district. Most Coloradans and 3rd District residents want border enforcement and strong measures to prevent illegal immigration, Tancredo said. Salazar, he said, opposed a fence on the U.S. Mexico border, as well as other measures intended to discourage illegal border crossing.
The enduring issues in this district are immigration and water policy. The incumbent is the older brother of first-term US Senator Ken Salazar, which is probably a factor in the apparent willingness to concede the seat.
Political analyst Charles Cook still lists the district as among the "50 Most Competitive House Seats," although he puts it in the "Likely Democratic" column.
