Another heartlands race gets hot and heavy in August, as the contest for incumbent GOP Rep. John Hostettler's seat heats up over congressional pay raises and pensions. Hostettler is being challenged by Democrat Brad Ellsworth, as Thomas B. Langhorne of The Evansville Courier & Press reports today:
Slamming Congress for accepting $31,600 in automatic pay raises over nearly 10 years while failing to balance the federal budget or raise the minimum wage, Democrat Brad Ellsworth signed a pledge Thursday not to go along.
Ellsworth, who is trying to unseat Rep. John Hostettler, R-Ind., pledged that if elected he will accept no pay raise until the budget is balanced. He said Hostettler hasn't tried to block the raises.Hostettler, who refused to accept the lifetime congressional pension on the grounds that it would add to the federal debt, responded by challenging Ellsworth.
