Oregon Governor: Westlund drops out

Bad news for Republican hopes for a pick-up as independent State Sen. Ben Westland drops out of the gubernatorial race. KTVZ and the Associated Press report:

State Sen. Ben Westlund, an independent from Tumalo, announced Thursday that he's dropping out of the Oregon gubernatorial race.

Westlund told reporters that he didn't want to be a "spoiler" candidate - in other words, skimming off just enough votes from Democratic Governor Kulongoski camp to give Republican challenger Ron Saxton the victory.

Read the full report HERE.

Westlund was a maverick Republican before leaving the party. He was expected to drain votes from the incumbent, though.

His withdrawal certainly makes it an uphill battle for Saxton, and may put victory practically out of reach.
