In the Democratic Primary for Governor, the Daytona Beach News-Journal comes out for Rod Smith:
State Sen. Rod Smith and U.S. Rep. Jim Davis have served this state long and well, and both offer deep insight into its needs. Both have also proven their ability to work effectively as members of the minority party. But Smith's initiative and leadership make him the better choice to face the Republican nominee.
Smith first drew attention as an elected state attorney in Gainesville, prosecuting serial killer Danny Rolling. Elected to the GOP-controlled Senate in 2000, he parlayed his experience into a speaking role on criminal justice issues, earning respect from members of both parties. Smith developed into one of the Democrats' most effective and influential negotiators, putting together bipartisan coalitions to improve ill-conceived legislation or block it altogether. His work in the Senate gives Floridians insight into how he would handle the governor's job -- building consensus without backing down on principle.
Read the whole editorial at the link above. Gee, they endorse Smith, but can't sing too much of Davis' praises?
I'm guessing this is a Democratic paper . . .
In the last St. Petersburg Times poll, Davis led with 35% to Smith's 21%, but a full 44% percent of primary voters remain undecided.
