If at first you don't succeed . . .

Democrats never seem to learn the postwar rules of American national politics: Democrats have the advantage when the central issues are domestic ones, Republicans have the advantage when national security and defense issues come to the fore.

The Democrats tried to run on "we can do it better" in Iraq and the War on Terror in 2004, just to see if the old rules still held. They do.

So, now, according to the New York Times - a declining Manhattan daily which was once a respected newspaper - the Democrats want to beat that dead horse again.

There is just one problem: the Democrats have no plan. While they may legitimately ask voters if they "feel safer," Republicans can legitimately ask what the Democrat alternative is besides "cut and run (or jog)." It is the Democrats who have held up Pentagon budget requests. It is the Democrats who have accused the troops of war crimes. It is the Democrats and their sympathizers who have leaked intelligence data to the media. It is the Democrats who have held up and blocked the tightening of security laws.

Some people just never learn. Let's see how "safe" America would feel with people like Pelosi, Dean, Kennedy, and Feingold leading our national security apparatus.
