2006 Pennsylvania Governor Race

There is some very good news in Pennsylvania. Apparently the Swann campaign has raised enough money that it can go on the air two weeks ahead of schedule. The campaign has released its first campaign ad of the general election.

It is an excellent start. The ad clearly shows Swann as a charismatic leader. However, Swann will eventually have to attack Rendell. Hopefully he will not make the same mistake that Bobbie Casey, Jr. and Mike Fisher made - namely, to attack Rendell with black/white ads. The best way to attack Rendell is to have Swann say something like - "in the last four years, state spending has grown nearly 30%. That is less money in the pockets of Pennsylvanians like you." Another one would be: "A recent business survey ranked Pennsylvania 41st in business favorability climate. With your vote and your help, I'm going to change that."

This kind of tactic gets the message across that Rendell is a tax-and-spend liberal bankrupting the state without the negative of attacking Rendell directly. It was a tactic that Rendell used spendidly in 2002, attacking the Ridge/Schweiker administration without attacking the two popular Republican Governors directly. Swann should do the same. If he does, it just may be curtains for Rendell.
