We last reported on the hotly contested campaign between Republican incumbent Thelma Drake and Democratic challenger Phil Kellam here and here. This race shows no sign of cooling off, either. Now, Kellam is admonished by The Virginian-Pilot for his rhetoric:
More recently, Phil Kellam, who wants U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake's seat in Congress, stepped over the line with a reference to his opponent's "hollow patriotism."
Heaven knows Drake has cast some bad votes in Washington, but her commitment to the military is beyond question, as is the sincerity of her patriotism.Kellam's characterization of Drake came in a discussion about the TRICARE system, and an attack on some of Drake's votes.

Now the newspaper is on his case for jabbing at Drake's patriotism, and any decent candidate should've known what a DUMB thing that is to say in this area. But his campaign put it out, proudly! Now, he turns down the American Legion for a debate, while attacking his opponents' patriotism? Even the Pilot whistles that play.
We're past the point where a standard grain of salt for inexperience is understood for challengers. This has been months and months of strategic mistakes and statements that are not errors or gaffes, but actual planned statements.
