Last week we reported the Republican party leaders in Tom Delay's old district had endorsed Dr. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs as their preferred write-in candidate to replace him.
Over the last few days, Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace, who was the first declared write-in candidate, and initially expected to carry the GOP endorsement, had declared he was staying in the race. Yesterday, he dropped out. Juan A. Lozano of the Associated Press reports:
Sugar Land Mayor David Wallace withdrew Monday as a Republican write-in candidate for the seat vacated by the resignation of former House Majority leader Tom DeLay.
His action left the Texas GOP united behind one write-in candidate, Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, who had won the party's endorsement last week.Wallace had previously indicated he would stay in the race despite the party's snub.
Read the rest at link above. Wallace claims the party didn't pressure him to get out. Uh-huh.
To recap: the write-in campaign was made necessary when courts refused to allow the Republicans to name a ballot replacement for DeLay, who won the spring primary but decided to withdraw from the race. Now, united behind Houston Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, the GOP will try to retain the seat with her write-in campaign against Democratic nominee and former Congressman Nick Lampson. President Bush carried this district with 64% of the vote in 2004; DeLay, already embattled by ethics charges, was reelected with 55% the same year.
Most analysts rate this contest as "lean Democratic," as no write-in candidate has ever been elected to Congress from Texas.

Hey, who do you think is running this outfit, Howard Dean? Kos?
No, like the mountain goat in "Hoodwinked," we are prepared. It's DeLay's neighborhood, and we have Karl Rove.
We will be distributing approximately 50 million slips of paper with "Sekula-Gibbs" in plain block letters, and at least one million pens which can write ONLY "Dr. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs" in the district.
It's not your father's Oldsmobile.
