Virginia Senate - Webb stumped here

Anyone who's been a political observer over the last 20 years or more is quite aware that Jim Webb might say any darned thing. You might suspect he would remember to at least mention his opponent, Senator George Allen - who has had recent embarassment - in the course of a campaign appearance. Well, no - but it is reported he did dress himself for the occasion.

Insider at HRPolitics reports:

Jim Webb continued his curious campaign of running against the wrong George.

Imagine this strategy session!

Consultant: "Mr. Webb, we think you should go to one of the more conservative cities in the Commonwealth with a huge military population and bash George Bush.

Webb: OK. Virginia Beach is in Virginia, right?

Consultant: Yes, sir. One more thing. While you're there, come out really strong for labor unions.

Webb: Brilliant idea!

So, Webb gets a big story in the Virginian-Pilot, without a word from him about George Allen (remember that guy...his opponent) but practically wearing the union label in conservative Virginia Beach.

It does seem that Democratic candidates across the nation are all running against George Bush - who is above their pay grade, and not on the ballot. At least they all got the talking points memo.

HRPolitics links to another Webbing at Shaun Kenney, a longtime political blogger from Virginia. Shaun examines Webb's answer to his own question: "What's the greatest challenge today facing America?" Read it at the preceding link.

Hey, one really big challenge America doesn't need is having Jim Webb in the Senate . . .

In 1974, Richard Nixon was not only not on the ballot, he wasn't even in office, but I think he hurt Republicans. I vaguely remember Republican ads from 1994 where a Democratic office seekers face would "morph" into Bill Clinton. You are deluding yourself if you think that Bush won't have an influence on this election.

Deluded? Did you even read... (Below threshold)

Deluded? Did you even read the article, or do your talking points get spewed no matter what?

Your moron-boy, Jim Webb, who is such an expert on naval issues he didn't even know about major changes being undertaken at Newport News, goes into one of the most conservative, heavily military/veteran cities on the east coast to bash Bush, promote labor unions, and doesn't even mention his opponent in the race?

Bright boys, aren't y'all?

Jim, nice retort and slap down of an obviously clueless liberal.

I personally love the fact that Democrats are running against Bush because it essentially "nationalizes" the mid-term elections and that can only help the Republicans.

I wonder if they will run against Bush in 2008? My guess is that they will.

This was a 15 minute speech... (Below threshold)
cynic:

This was a 15 minute speech... a whole 15 minutes without mentioning George Allen? Terrible!

What, it was a speech to the "Virginia State Building & Construction Trades Council"? Talking about unions? What an idiot... no, not Webb.
