Tonight, at 9:00 PM, the President will address the nation from the Oval Office.
Five years ago tonight, George W. Bush made one of the best speeches of his Presidency. Reciting the Psalm 23, the then still new President declared that: "This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world."
Five years later, the United States has not been attacked again. However, the President's high popularity has fallen to around 40% because of the war in Iraq. Tonight is an excellent opportunity for the President to remind the nation of what we endured that day, and to reenforce the message that only an aggressive strategy can prevent if from happening it again.
His speech tonight will probably define the remaining years of his Presidency.

I think he gave as good a speech as we could expect.
Those who will not be convinced aren't going to be moved, of course. His target audience is that large swath of Americans who supported the Iraq invasion at first, but are now telling pollsters it was a mistake.
If this, combined with the recent speeches by Cheney and Rumsfeld, can't get through to most of those people and get them back on board, it probably could not have been done. And we should redouble our prayers.
