George Allen has been one of the most lackluster Senators in Virginia history. Following our President in all of his mistakes has cost Allen dearly. As a Governor, he was just as bad. Ask any state employee and they will tell you he did nothing for four years. That set our state back more than even the Gilmore years. With the macaca comment we can only hope that his chances for the Republican nomination for President have vanished. Jim Webb looks better every day.

I'd agree that Allen has damaged his chances for the 2008 nomination, possibly beyond repair, because of a single word. This ties George Romney, Mitt's father, who killed his own chances for the 1968 Republican nomination by saying he was "brainwashed" by the military on his tour of Vietnam.
But as far as the Virginia Senate seat goes, Allen is still the strong favorite. The closing of the polls is entirely a reaction to the "macaca" comment. Luckily for Allen, it came early enough to be overcome by November. Webb is a lousy candidate with nothing positive to offer, and Allen has a huge advantage in money.
