2006 New Jersey Senate Race

Things are not looking good for the Democratic Party's hope of saving the United States Senate seat presently held in New Jersey.

According to a new Strategic Vision poll, Tom Kean is now leading Bob Menendez 44% to 40%. Kean has been leading by a few points in virtually every poll released recently in this race. It has promoted Congressional Quarterly to rate this race a toss-up.

As if to add to the perception that his campaign is falling apart, Menendez is declining to appear on Meet the Press to debate his opponent.

Since it is the taint of corruption which is sinking Menendez, how clever of his campaign team to come out with a new ad depicting him as a "fighter against corruption." They should have dressed him up in a cape. Here's the Associated Press report by Jeffrey Gold:

Sen. Robert Menendez on Wednesday began airing a second campaign ad in as many days, this one aimed at portraying him as someone who risked his life to fight political corruption.

The television ad for the Democrat comes with less than two months remaining in his close race with Republican state Sen. Tom Kean Jr., who has attempted to portray Menendez as an ethical calamity.

In the spot, Menendez is seen saying, "I was threatened for taking on corrupt politicians, but you have to stand up for what is right. No matter what." An announcer says Menendez wore a bulletproof vest and sent crooked politicians to prison.

The whole story is at the link above. Menendez did testify against his old pal, Union City Mayor William Musto, in 1982, but why would you go out of your way to remind people how close you've been to corrupt figures in the past when everyone is looking at your ethics today?

Ah, another Jersey Democrat, another prison sentence. The days are just so full . . .

Here's the question that's on everybody's mind:

Who will the Democrats in New Jersey trot out next month when they realize that they need to pull a Torricelli? Who's in a position to step in and rally like Lautenberg? Could Bill Bradley come off the bench?

Good question, Dominick and... (Below threshold)

Good question, Dominick and one I was thinking about myself. Could Corzine appoint himself?

A few more points and it will be time to pull a Toricelli. Hey what about Toricelli? Could people have forgotten about him?

Instead of "pulling a Torri... (Below threshold)

Instead of "pulling a Torricelli," I prefer the phrasing, "passing the Torch."

"Torch" was Torricelli's nickname, of course. If you have to ask why - fuggeddabowdit!
