Apparently the son has indeed endorsed him. In a newscast tonight he and some other black (dem) leaders were announcing their support for Steele. I was on the way out the door, but I think it was Fox. His TV commercial was great.

The timing could not be better for Steele. Cardin finds his campaign distracted with the "Persuasionatrix" brouhaha while Steele scores a key endorsement: the electorate will assume the son's endorsement reflects a tacit signal from Mfume himself (absent any evidence of family strife between them). The other Democratic leaders' endorsement comes just as he has pulled even or ahead in the polls.
This has repercussions beyond Maryland. Cardin is an experienced fundraiser with backing from major PACs and interest groups, so most Democratic calculations have assumed he would need little help from the national party. Any funds they send him will be funds previously targeted for other races, mostly those with the potential for a Democratic pick-up.
If the Democrats send help to Cardin to hold the seat in Maryland, those races may find themselves shortchanged. In close elections, having the money for a late ad blitz can mean the difference between winning and losing.
