Alexander K. McClure reported yesterday on a new Quinnipiac showing only a 1-point lead for Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown over incumbent Republican Sen. Mike DeWine, a statistical dead heat where previous polls had showed a significant Brown lead. Now another result confirms this, as the Ohio Poll is in, as Darrel Rowland of The Columbus Dispatch reports:
Two polls released yesterday show that Ohio's race for the U.S. Senate is very close, and the contest for governor is not.
The Ohio Poll shows Democratic challenger Sherrod Brown with a 4-point lead over GOP Sen. Mike DeWine, barely outside the survey's 3.8-point margin of error.* * * * *
Both polls indicate that independent voters could determine who wins the Senate matchup.
The Ohio Poll shows the candidates deadlocked among the nonpartisans, with 11 percent undecided. Brown held a 3-point lead, with 17 percent yet to make up their mind, Quinnipiac says.
The latter survey showed potential gains for DeWine among that group: 62 percent of independents say their view of Brown is either mixed or they don't know enough about him to form an opinion. Only 45 percent say the same about the incumbent.

Given the history of polling in this race, DeWine has to be happy with the trend. Cook's Political Report, RealClearPolitics, Larry Sabato, and CQ Politics all rate this contest a "toss-up," while Election Projection has it as a "Moderate Democratic Gain."
