Virginia Senate - Webb and the "N" word

I noted in the final update to this post that Democratic nominee James Webb won't deny using the "N-word" himself. Naturally, this has spurred a feeding frenzy as the media tracks down his complete history over the last 35 years or so.

Oh, NO IT HASN'T! Sorry, I must have been imagining the good old days when the formerly Mainstream Media (fMSM) at least pretended to be objective. Why aren't people talking about Webb's startling admission as much as Allen's denials of charges from Democratic operatives?

Bob Lewis of the Associated Press at least mentions it:

Also Tuesday, Allen's Democratic opponent, Jim Webb, declined to say definitively whether he had ever used a racial slur to describe blacks.

"I don't think that there's anyone who grew up around the South that hasn't had the word pass through their lips at one time or another in their life," Webb told reporters.

Webb referred to his novel, "Fields of Fire," which aides said includes passages using the n-word as part of character dialogue. But he added: "I have never issued a racial or ethnic slur."

Asked for clarification of his original answer, spokeswoman Jessica Smith quoted Webb as saying, "I have never used that word in my general vocabulary or in any derogatory way."

She declined to say whether he had ever used the word apart from when he wrote his book.

Read the whole story at the link above; the excerpt on Webb is buried at paragraph #7, sandwiched by more rehashing of the allegations against Allen.

If the "issue" were really the use of racial slurs, and not simply an attempt to derail Allen with a phony "scandal" because Webb can't win on real issues, there would be at least equal controversy and coverage of Webb's non-denial, wouldn't there?

The difference is, of course, that Jim Webb was being honest, and Allen was lying.

Allen said he'd NEVER used it. Webb said that he did, and cited the use of it in one of his novels as an example.

Based upon the wacko talking points offered up by the Allen apologists on this quetsion, they are arguing that Webb is "just as bad" as Allen because he use dthe word in a novel.

Well, then, I guess that makes Mark Twain an inveterate racist too.

You people are just too silly to take seriously anymore.

BTW, I remember when "conservative blogs" jumped all over the Trent Lott ting to prove they:

A) Weren'r racists, and

B) Would criticize opne of their own.

Unlike those lockstep, lemming libbie blogs, dontcha know.

Well, so much for all that hard work.

you make the statement that Allen was lying.
prove it. where is the evidence that he ever used the dreaded n-word?

so far i have heard of one former college teammate make the accusation. refuted by 4 other teammates.

then there is the political commentator who says he recently heard about it from people he won't name, thus denying the ability to substantiate or refute.

hardly proof. if you have better, let's hear it.

Jim Webb and I became very good friends while we were in the U.S. Naval Academy. I was a plebe and he was already a secondclassman (third year). And I was in the Academy as a foreign midshipman from the Philippines. He impressed me with his ease in dealing and connecting in a pleasant but dignified way with all sorts of people. He later became a senior officer in the Brigade of Midshipmen leadership hierarchy. Our friendship survived the decades after graduation and we exchanged visits, I to his place in Virginia and he to the Philippines. My Congress staffers have nothing but good words for him because of his easygoing ways.
I wish him luck in his present endeavors which admittedly are intestinally more demanding than writing a good novel, but on par with the tough boxing matches he went through at Annapolis.

Scrapiron:

The stack of sh** the democrats put togather about Allen is now melting into a mess. A noted professor has now retracted his statement that he had heard Allen use nigger as a slam against a black. See everyone, quit beating around the bush and use the word nigger not the letter n. Everyone knows what you're doing and that makes you no better than someone that comes out and says the word. Actually it marks you as a coward hiding behind the word and a real racist to boot. Now in the world of hype a professor that was reconized as a streight shooter can no longer be trusted in anything he says. This kind of thing will not be forgotten, and will also mark Webb's life as a liar, a spoiled brat, and a slimeball. Believe it or not, until this debacle he had my vote. Now we know he's a worthless pile of sh** with no plan to help Va and will do or say anything for a vote. I have sent Allen (and Warner) many messages (maybe you can check his official email and find my messages) letting him know he could no longer count on my support or vote. Now Allen has gained one more vote. Maybe I should get his last letter (from yesterday) out of the trash and send him a contribution.

Allen did use the term Macaca. And that is an ethnic slur. I saw the film on tv. That man is not fit to serve in government.

What part of "I have never used that word in my general vocabulary or in any derogatory way" don't YOU understand? Here, I'll translate it into monosyllabic speech for you:

"Yes, I did use that word, but not to hurt people."

It's not the word, it's the intent. That's why "macaca" was so damaging. None of us had ever heard that word before, but it was obvious that his INTENT was to humiliate a dark skinned person. And I don't believe for a second that you're too stupid to understand that, no matter how much fake outrage you muster up.

You are pretty good at the monosyllabic speech. Perhaps less so at mind reading.
