I was seriously livid when I read this article.
As I have been repeating ad nauseum for as long as I can remember, we have five extremely vulnerable seats this year - Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Missouri.
In Ohio, the Republican is having a hard time winning because of a corrupt Republican Governor.
In Pennsylvania, the Republican is having a hard time because of the unpopularity of the President.
In Rhode Island, the Republican is trying to win re-election in a state that has so few Republicans that there isn't a last person to turn out the lights.
In Missouri, the Republican incumbent is competing for re-election in a state that has been for decades one of the most closely fought battlegrounds in the nation.
And then there is Montana.
The Democrats nominated a dangerous left-wing extremist with a funny name who thinks the Patriot Act has nothing to do with the War on Terror. The Democratic candidate is to John Kerry's left. He's probably to Ned Lamont's left. Meanwhile, the liberal internet fringe has been busy raising enormous sums of money for Tester.
But what does incumbent Republican Senator Conrad Burns do? Instead of annihilating Tester, like he should be, Burns makes gaffe after gaffe, stupid statement after stupid statement. One would hope that after being burned so many times, Burns would stop touching the stove. But today the Senator practically put both hands on at a Senate hearing.
Burns really should drop out of the race and let Mark Racicot run in his place. Of course we will have to see whether Racicot wants to go to Washington. He said he didn't want to go to DC back in 2002 when we needed someone to run against Baucus.
(That didn't stop him though from taking a position with the RNC.)
People like Racicot and Burns are why we do not have the supermajority we could have. We should not lose Montana, but Burns seems determined to pull off the impossible.

Sounds like Burns has joined a growing list of Senile Senior citizens that have no business in congress. Ted Kennedy and KKK Byrd along with a dozen more are bumbling idiots but no one has the guts to get them out of there. Before you say i slandered the Senior Citizens, I am one so I know their limitations, and fast on your feet and fleet of mind isn't in the cards for them. Sometimes I have to look at my drivers license to see where I live. Just kidding, almost.

No, RNC leaders who fail to develop a full-pipeline farm system and a DEEP BENCH are why we do not have the supermajority we should have.

Didn't somebody run against Burns in the primary?
And yet, Burns still won? I know that despite its political leanings at the Presidential level, Burns is like only the second Republican Senator in a damn long time. But I find it beyond belief that this is the best we can do against Tester. Your right, as looney as he is, we should be blowing his doors off. This seat shouldn't even be in play, let along endangered. I don't know if Montana law would allow Burns to drop out so that we could replace him with someone else. But if so, I hope they do it quick.
Ken

I remember the old story of Harold Ickes, Sr., who was so disturbed when he heard we would be supporting the dictator Somoza (also "Sr.") in Nicaragua that he directly challenged FDR, saying, "How can you support this man? He's a SOB!"
Roosevelt replied, "Yes, he is, Harold - but he is OUR SOB!"
We have to accept that a large percentage of elected officials, even from the Republican Party, will be pretty much a bunch of idiots. The hope is that we can keep our idiots in line for the most important votes, at least.
Even if Burns is a total boob, and I suspect he is, at least he isn't a leftist extremist, which Tester assuredly is. Montanans have to decide whether they would rather be embarrassed by a goofball or by a moonbat. If they didn't want to be embarrassed at all, they should have voted differently in the respective primaries.

I think some of the analysis in this thread is dangerous. To say DeWine's troubles are due to a corrupt governor (and not mention anything else) is simplistic.
To simply 'blame Bush' for Santorum's troubles is likewise simplistic.
And to forget that our Senator in MT is one of the more 'corrupt' ones (cough - easily swayed) who should have resigned during the primary fight is to avoid placing blame where it lies.
