All the analysts have this seat, which was held for years by the retiring Republican Jim Kolbe, as leaning or likely Democratic takeover. Republican nominee Randy Graf is viewed as a polarizing figure in a moderately conservative district, due mainly to his immigration views, and it is thought that the moderate Republicans and independents will reject him in favor of the Democrats' lackluster nominee, State Sen. Gabby Gifford.
McCain's endorsement is a big help overcoming the divide, as Daniel Scarpinato of the Arizona Daily Star reports:
Republican congressional candidate Randy Graf has won the endorsement of political superstar John McCain -- a significant step, the campaign says, toward unifying moderates and conservatives.
"Randy Graf's record as a state representative has demonstrated his commitment to the values important to the people of Arizona," McCain said in a written statement provided to the Arizona Daily Star."His voting record on issues such as supporting our military, reducing taxes and reining in election and welfare fraud bodes well for his future in the U.S. Congress," McCain wrote. "I urge the voters of the 8th district to support him on November 7th. It would be a pleasure to work with him in Washington."
Read the whole article at link above. Kolbe still hasn't endorsed Graf, which is payback for a previous campaign which Graf lost and refused to endorse Kolbe. Even that may not be as harmful as previously thought, now that Kolbe is drawn into the web of the Foley affair, as another Scarpinato article suggests:
While national discussion has been focused on how the Foley incident will hurt Republicans, the situation may play differently in Southern Arizona, said Carol Zimmerman, a pollster and Democratic strategist.
Graf, who has already condemned Foley's actions, has run as the anti-Kolbe, anti-establishment candidate, with national Republicans snubbing him at times. In contrast, most Republicans elsewhere are running as incumbents, carrying with them the baggage of being tied to Washington. What was once viewed as a liability could now work to Graf's benefit, Zimmerman said.
"If I were Graf, knowing I'm behind, I'd distance myself from the Republican fray," she said. "I might capitalize on it. Do the moral outrage -- throw all those rascals out and bring morality in."

Dear Republican, Conservative and Patriot friends,
If Randy Graf wins his Congressional race in Arizona, it will be a HUGE win for conservatives and for the battle against illegal immigration. It will be like electing 5 conservative congressmen. Randy is also a rock solid conservative on economic and social issues and he is very pro-gun rights. This is the most important race in the nation for conservatives in 2006. So let's win it!
Here is how we can volunteer for Randy Graf and help him win no matter where we live in the USA or Texas. 1) call Randy Graf's HQ at 520-887-2984 and tell them you will make GOTV phone calls for them the last 4 days of the election (Nov. 7th). 2) Go to www.votegraf.com and give some money (any amount) and sign up for email alerts. 3) The volunteer coordinator for Randy Graf is Alice "Alli" Trimble and her email address is alice@votegraf.com . 4) post the above information on every email list you can and every major conservative web site 5) travel to Tucson, AZ and campaign the last 4 days there on the ground for Randy Graf 6) send this email out to your email address book.
The bottom line is if we recruit 100 people nationwide and each one makes 5 hours of GOTV phone calls before Nov. 7th, then we might get 1,000 to 1,500 votes for Randy Graf with our grassroots efforts and that could be the difference in this campaign. Also, I have friends who are traveling to Tucson to help GOTV the last 4 days.
Our volunteer time is precious and I only give mine to candidates who truly deserve it. Randy Graf, who is a Tom Tancredo clone, has proven himself worthy of my efforts and many of you who I have spoken to.
I'm going to personally make at least 20 hours of phone calls the last 4 days of the election, but for now WE need to RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT other volunteers who will make 6 hours of phone calls in the 72 hours GOTV for Randy Graf just before and on Nov. 7th.
