As we move to the last few weeks and I monitor the polls, it is going to be a rough election to win for the GOP. And why? It is not Foley or Abramoff. No, it is the politics of defeat and fear that have been pounded into the ears of the voters for over a year. Why? For political advantage - no more.
And there are those in the GOP, including its candidates and leaders, who have been intimidated by the gauntlet of negatives that have been dumped on them need to quit reacting, buck up and lead again.
Issue - the war in Iraq is going bad. Well what is going bad is the terrorist thugs are stepping up the murders. Why? Because it plays in the newspapers and nightly news. The effect is that it shocks the average American, giving the air of chaos, giving the Democrats something to criticize the Bush administration, and the net result being to elect the Democrats who will leave Iraq, give the terrorists a delayed victory, and set the stage for a future terrorist attack on Americans. The blood of the Iraqi civilians and our troops by the wanton murders is directly caused by this terrorist attempt to defeat the will of Americans to win.
Issue - the deficit. The Republicans have spent us into massive debt. Wait a minute - we are paying for a war - 2 wars in fact, 2 massive devastations caused by Hurricane Katrina and Rita. Couple this with numerous relief efforts for smaller natural disasters across the country, help to world disasters and instituting a national prescription drug program. But wait a minute! We did not have to raise taxes, have a war bonds campaign, and cut other spending. We are reducing the deficit, and the stock market is poised to break 12000 on the Dow. Not bad.
Issue - unemployment - well that one is in the minds of only those who are unemployed.
Not a bad record. Why aren't ALL Republicans campaigning on it? Why are some Republicans shielding themselves from these successes?
OK Conservatives and Republicans, get this message out. Quit hiding from your successes! You do not have to defend your record. It is a good record, one we can be proud to stand on next month.
And lastly, think about a Democratic Congress. The clamor for tax increases, impeachment, withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan, and the loss of the prestige of this country in the world. Back to the days of Jimmy Carter when the Russians mocked us, the country's economy matched that of a third world country with high interest rates, and we allowed terrorists like Khomeini and the Sandinistas to seize power.

Those who are depressed from the news in the antique media are casualties of asymetrical war.

As Thomas Sowell points out, a Democratic victory in the House and Senate will enable the Democrats to impeach both Bush and Cheney. Does one require any additional incentive to vote Republican beyond avoidance of a result which Constitutionally may lead to a President Pelosi ?

But do they have the 66 or 67 votes needed in the Senate to convict/remove?

Alexander-
Terrific post and good comments.
Especially this-
Lesson learned by our enemies over the years-the easiest way to defeat America is to have us lose the war at home.
It's become evident that the terrorists know their most influential allies, the mouth pieces for their propaganda, the ones who spread doubt across America are the media, and the party opposite.
The terrorists have taken our strengths and turned them into weaknesses. Actually that gives the terrorists too much credit. The press and party opposite have made those choices to the detriment of us all.
The media is one of the greatest unchecked powers in the United States and they lack the scruples to reign themselves in-they know that pessimism sells. {I think it appeals to the very survivalist instinct of human nature that obsesses about the negative and takes for granted the positive.}
The Administration's successes have taken the threat of terrorism and the economy off the front burners of the American psyche. It seems that the American public has been afforded the luxury of taking that all for granted and remain ungrateful.
We will know by the first week of November.
{PS- brace yourselves for the "breaking news item" that gets bomb dropped about Nov. 4th- that leaves Republicans with little time to recover. It will be time to turn off the media and press forward to the polls. The "October Surprise" is now passe because the news cycles more rapidly these days.}

iF you saw the debate between the Minnesota senatorial candidates Kobuchar and Kennedy this weekend on Meet the Press -Tim Russert kept bringing up the quotes of Kobuchar the Democrat when she said something to the effect there is not enough evidence to Impeach or Convict at this time...
She's a prosecutor and she knows how to play word games. She keeps her base of Bush haters rising to the bait-she placates the conservative constituents from Kennedy's old congressional district -the 6th-all while keeping her options open. A potential junior Hillary.
Later-"Look!" what we discovered-of course she'll be in favor of opening investigations to FIND the evidence.
The Democrats are not above that don't be fooled for a minute. They could careless about the geopolitical or longterm ramifications.

I posted this comment on a thread on the main page, but it applies equally here:
The defeatists are succumbing to the temptation to lose. Losing is easy. Takes almost no effort at all, and you get that wonderful depressing feeling to help you feel sorry for yourself.
Winning is hard, which is why it is heralded and respected. Winning takes guts, and the ability to persevere in the face of adversity. It takes the determination to fight through the pain and distractions, execute your plan, and see it through to the end.
A football team which enters the 4th quarter down two touchdowns can do one of two things: they can bow to the scoreboard, give up, and get it over with - OR they can knuckle down and fight harder to pull own the win.
Guess which attitude wins more games?
Reminds me of an old verse:
To all you whining, handwringing, blame-assigning losers out there: kindly step out of the way - it's annoying having to clamber over your prostrate forms on the way to winning.

this why why keeping the woefully incompetent Scott McClellen in as WH spokesman will prove to be the most painful blunder of the Bush presidency.
The central front of the GWOT was US public opinion and we fought the weakest there

I truly believe and have heard it discussed on news shows that the terrorists are increasing the death count to help insure Bush's party loses the election. They are convinced that if Democrats win it will be easier for them to defeat the United States. They are very savvy politicial operatives themselves. Of course, they are absolutely correct.
Prepare for endless scandals to befall the Republicans these next weeks, cooked up by Emmanuel and Schumer and the old Clintonista war machine (remember Emmanuel was part of that). Do we really want to just surrender and see a return to the Clinton era??
