In what is supposedly one of the major contested races targeted by Democrats, where their challenger Phil Kellam is taking on incumbent Republican Rep. Thelma Drake, a major kerfluffle has arisen over the debate scheduled for Thursday evening, to be hosted by the Central Business District Association, a Democratic-controlled business group. The CBDA has ordered no taping - audio or video - of the event, although it is still being considered for broadcast by CSPN.
Tidewater Democrats are so proud of their candidate, they are frantic to prevent his words from being recorded. If only all Democrats practiced such humility . . . our man Insider at Hampton Roads Politics brings the Drake campaign's response:
That, combined with the fact that the local media will be freely allowed to record the events as they see fit, lead me to the conclusion that there is no rational reason for the two campaigns involved to be prevented from taping the debate.
I have a further concern that you have not permitted local blogs to record and "pod cast" the debate. This has been done in the past, with a great benefit to the community at large who cannot actually attend the debate. We intend to participate in the debate.
Please be advised that we also intend to tape record the debate, both on video and audio.
We never agreed to any such "no taping" rule, and do not plan to abide by it.
Read more at the link above. I think this "no taping" strategy is a great idea for Kellam, and I bet the handlers of that other idiot-boy in Pennsylvania, Bob Casey Jr., wish they had thought of it.

This will bring more video ... (Below threshold)1. Posted by Scrapiron | October 19, 2006 3:02 AM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast)
This will bring more video and audio recorders than anything the democ'rat party could have done. I'd like to see what law they use to keep them out. Is this debate taking place in a public or private facility? Someone is going to get a bad image from this at the least.

The debate will be in a private venue, but local media is allowed. They are, strangely, only trying to prevent the campaigns from taping - a transparent attempt to shield Kellam from himself.
As far as "the law" goes, I am unsure how an invited participant in a campaign event for federal office could be stopped from recording it.
