Ohio Senate - GOP pulls ads for DeWine

The RNC has pulled its ad buys in Ohio for the last week of the campaign. The reserved time was scheduled for ads in support of Sen. Mike DeWine, one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents. Stephen Koff of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports:

For Democrat Sherrod Brown, the RNC's cancellation is a sign of surrender, hinted at by Republican leaks more than a week ago. Brown led DeWine 48 percent to 40 percent in polling released this week by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.

National and state Republican officials as well as the DeWine campaign said that DeWine can fill the airwaves without the RNC. With $2.8 million on hand as of Oct. 18, "we have a 3½ -to-1 cash advantage" over Brown, DeWine spokesman Brian Seitchik said. "We're definitely going to be able to communicate our message to the voters of Ohio."

Ohio Republican Chairman Bob Bennett was dismissive of the notion that the RNC is disappointed with DeWine's performance. He maintained that the party is merely "shifting around their buys here because Mike has enough money to cover it."

Read the rest at link above. Remember a week or so ago, Democrats were trumpeting that the GOP was giving up on Ohio by pulling ads, but the ads kept coming. It seems they are now claiming this cancellation is a sign of the same thing.

Here's why this happened: television stations have a limited amount of commercial time available, especially the networks. They aren't going to cut off the thrilling conclusion of Law and Order or the vote results on American Idol just to sell another commercial or two. So political campaigns must reserve their space early, or risk ending the campaign with a load of cash and nothing to spend it on.

This Ohio space was reserved well ahead of time IN CASE it was needed. With DeWine holding a hefty money edge over his opponent, the RNC decided to use the money they had alloted to Ohio in some other state where it might be of more help.

Remember the Democrats said the same thing about Rep. Chocola in Indiana's 2nd CD in September when the RCCC dumped a bunch of cash into House races and didn't include his. But Chocola has his own money - lots of it - and has never had a problem raising money. He didn't get the help because he didn't need it, and others did.

Based on his past actions I won't be sorry to see RINO De-whine gone. Now we can get rid of RINO Warner from Va in the next cycle.

I'm no fan of DeWine, but Sherrod Brown makes Castro look like a moderate.

Warner isn't going to run again in Virginia. Former Democratic Gov. Mark Warner, who just dropped out of the 2008 Presidential race before getting "in," probably decided he can grab that seat on the basis on his last name, and hold it forever. He might be right, too.

Jeremy Wien:

Jim,

Your comment shows zero understanding of VA politics. Mark Warner is the only figure in VA MORE popular than John Warner. And Mark Warner will win that seat (if he runs) because he's beloved there. Make no mistake about it, Tim Kaine was a good candidate, but Mark Warner carried him. VA still (barely) tilts gop, and w/o Warner, Kaine would have lost by at least a few points.

Don't presume that the voters of VA or the readers of this site are so ignorant.

Ha! IF Mark Warner is "more popular than John" after pushing through a huge tax increase which then proved completely unnecessary, then there are indeed many ignorant people there.

And if you don't think a certain amount of his vote for Governor came from name confusion, you are one of them.

GOPWins:

Yeah, Wien's right about Warner. I'm a conservative Republican, and while I didn't vote for Warner, he was a decent governor. He carried Kaine -- whom I also didn't vote for. He would probably win the Senate race.

Yeah, I have family and friends in the Old Dominion - where I lived for 23 years - who voted for Warner, too. But I have to put Jeremy through his paces . . . it's like taking your dog for a walk . . .

Jim--NAME CONFUSION?? HE WAS THE GOVERNOR!!

I'm not talking about his election in 2001--he left office with a 70%+ approval rating. You think those people were actually approving of their Senator and having NO IDEA who their governor was??

Let me ask you this--why did Tim Kaine win??

Even his campaign admits it's cause of Mark Warner. I actually don't know why I've wasted 3 minutes typing this--I generally enjoy "debating" with people on the other side, but the fact that someone so ignorant actually writes a blog that may influence opinion is frightening.

The fact that you think Mark Warner's popularity is really John Warner's--I know you can't grasp that someone who doesn't cut taxes could be popular, but maybe if you realized he did it w/gop legislatures because it was needed to keep the state's bond rating at AAA. If they would have lost that, it would have cost them much more money in the future.

That, plus the fact that he truly represented mainstream Virginians. He was pro-choice, but anti-late-term abortion, pro-waiting-period, and pro-parental-consent for minors. He's pro-gun and anti-gay-mariage. He's a moderate who was well-liked on both sides of the aisle.

This is not a Jeremy-Wien-original-idea. It's not even a debate. Call the VA gop and ask them. Maybe you should learn about politics before having a blog, or more accurately, cause you're clearly not totally politically ignorant, only comment on things you do know SOMETHING about.

Thanks.

Mark Warner raised every tax and fee in the state of Va., even when told it was unnecessary to raise the income tax because of the improving economy. We ended up with a billion dollar + surplus. Along came another dimwit governor and he has alread raised every fee in the state again, hunting and fishing license's went up 50%. I challenge anyone to find the billion + dollar surplus or find where it went. Now we don't even have money for road improvement. There are several millionaire democrats (who bought the previous two elections) floating around with an extra million or two in their bank account, somewhere overseas? They always get paid back with taxpayer money, and a lot more than they spent.

The boy is thick as a brick.

READ my post: I said "a certain amount of his vote for Governor came from name confusion." He was NOT the Governor at that time, he was RUNNING for Governor. The matter was discussed in the state media at the time.

Ahen, getting back to Ohio:... (Below threshold)

Ahen, getting back to Ohio: DeWine is not very impressive but he is far better than Brown. If the polls are correct today, DeWine has to overcome a 9-11 point deficit. He has lots of money but if he fails, and Blackwell fails and D. Pryce fails, it will tumble Ohio into a Blue funk. And in '08 , that will be disastrous for the GOP. If Ohio's voters still care, are Pub, and decided to sit this one out, I pray they will come back to rescue Ole Rino and certainly help Pryce . Blackwell is dead because of Taft and that is too bad. Hopefully, in two years, the Pubs revive their Party in Ohio or the race in '08 may be over before it starts.
