2006 Illinois Congressional Districts

It looks like Democrats have an Illinois problem. The Republican candidate for the seat of retiring Henry Hyde has a four point lead. Moreover, the Republican challenger to Democratic incumbent Melissa Bean, a surprise victor in 2004, has pulled into a dead heat. But for the poor quality of the Republican Gubernatorial candidate, the GOP would probably easily hold the former and likely take the later. However, any Democratic incumbent on the defensive is good news.

I categorically disagree with this assessment. Judy Baar Topinka is a good candidate, the strongest statewide Republican vote-getter of recent memory.

The problem in Illinois is the general weakness of the Republican Party organization here, not a problem of this candidate. Remember: this is the party organization that ran Alan Keyes against Barack Obama for the Senate.

I never thought Roskam would fail to hold the Hyde seat, but I didn't think we had a chance to unseat Melissa Bean this year, given the national atmosphere.

However, Illinois presents a similar, if less intensely covered, problem for Democrats that Ohio gives Republicans: state scandals hurt the down-ticket.

Charlie Cook strikes again. His RT/CD groups have news ones out on KY3 and IL6 that are 180* of other polls. They have Northrup down 6? and Duckworth up while every other one has her down? It looks as though Cook is just trying to publish polls that he hopes will get him more face time and force the GOP to divert money they really don't need to divert.
