Radical Fringe

It has become very fashionable among some "conservative" circles these days to denigrate the leadership of President George W. Bush and to demand a return to the days of President Ronald Reagan. The general claim is that under Ronald Reagan, the Republican Party adhered to "true conservative" values and therefore won, and that the party lost last week because of the "RINO" policies of President Bush.

First, we need to compare the electoral records of the two Presidents. Ronald Reagan led the party in the elections of 1980, 1982, 1984, and 1986.

1980: Senate +12
1982: Senate -1
1984: Senate -2
1986: Senate -8
1988: Senate -1

2000: Senate -5
2002: Senate +2
2004: Senate +4
2006: Senate -6
2008: ?

Anyone with a semblance of objectivity would realize that most of the gains in 1980 were only natural, given the GOP debacle in 1974 after Watergate. Under Reagan, the GOP lost Senate seats in each successive election. When Reagan was winning 49 states, the party he led lost two Senate seats. If this is supposed to reflect the triumph of conservativism, I don't want to know what the defeat of conservativism would be.

In comparison, the GOP did lost 5 Senate seats in 2000. However, most of those seats were taken in the GOP landslide of 1994. Losses were to be expected in 2000 as gains were to be expected in 1980. When Bush won re-election, he brought with him a net of four Democratic seats. And yes, the GOP lost 6 seats last week. But George W. Bush had nothing to do with George Allen's (the one the fringe saw as the next Reagan) inability to control his mouth.

It doesn't bother me when people on the left go on television act as if George W. Bush is an idiot. The Dan Rathers of the world are not a threat to the Republican Party. However, the radical purist fringe which has hijacked and polluted the legacy of President Reagan and seeks to control the party is a threat.

The Republican Party can continue to follow President Bush, in which case, the loss last week will be as transient historically as 1946-1948 in the history of the Roosevelt Coalition. Or it can follow the immigration, abortion, and other assorted fanatics down the road to electoral oblivion. Of course, these people may deem our nominee in 2008 a "RINO" and sit home.

However, that should not deter us from our duty. The stakes for the country could not be higher.

With conservatives like these, who needs Democrats?

Actually the Democratic party could use a few, but that's another story.

I'm in agreement that George W. Bush is very much a conservative (and a compassionate conservative at that) He is a true leader, who understands that 'pragmatically' he has to lead with what this nation has become, not what he'd like it to be.

He has the vision to know that when 93 million baby boomers retire, it's going to be a lot cheaper to give such group a rx than a week in the hospital, he has the vision to know that there will be a labor shortage (when same 93 million baby boomers take themselves from the work force) A labor shortage because of American's 'contraceptive' and 'abortion' mentality, This President was not the reason for all the illegal immigrants, but he knows they are here, he knows taxes are not being paid, I am conservative, but I am with our President, it's better to allow those here to somehow pay some type of penalty for how they came, but the cost to send back this LABOR FORCE which will be needed down the road - would be rediculous, let them stay, give them a guest card (with restrictions) and let them work and pay thier taxes as well as their employers paying their taxes.

Our President is not a RINO...what he is, is a Christian, who has to work with both sides WHILE keeping TRUTHS that never change as is.

As for Republicans generally speaking - THE STRONG OF VALUES...has to BUILD UP thier weaker 'brother' ... this isn't about party per se...it's about ETERNAL LIFE... REPUBLICANS HAVE TO LIVE THE TRUTH ... and know WHY they live it.
(and when they do, people will take notice)

and yes, "Republicans" will gain seats again.

PEOPLE crave to know right vs wrong--Republicans,
socially conservative and fiscally conservative,
be STRONG in your beliefs...wishy washy NOT
welcome in the party.

ba, I agree with you completely. And I love this president. As for the Republicans in Congress, they have themselves to blame for their losses. They would have been better off sticking with Bush and supporting their President than running away from him. And they are completely responsible for their own corruption and lack of backbone in the majority. So now they want to blame Bush like everyone else in the world does. Sad, sad bunch.

Compassionate conservative means big government conservative. A simple guest worker program that was not amnesty would have saved the GOP from pro-immigration revolt.

Have to disagree Lorenu, compassionate conservative DOES NOT have to mean 'big government'

Who wants a conservative who ALWAYS goes strictly by the book, without taking a hard look at the situation and understanding 'the nature of the beast' (the why behind why people do what they do)

One can be 'compassionate' [a thinker WITH heart]
and not want a government to be the 'power over the people' Democrat ideology is that 'the government' must rule over 'the weak' (even if they claim to be conservative) This idea probably comes from thier Faith in God lacks, so someone must rule. A Republican's compassion, stems from the source of that compassion, God, an understanding of the objective truth, all have fallen short at times. They know THE TRUTH that
GOD is the power who can help others, not they per se. So they 'forgive at times' a transgression for THE BIGGER PICTURE of what common good can come to be.

I disagree, Lorenu, your statement is an overgeneralization without seeing the indidividual who shows compassion 'at times'/ie:
Does the individual generally have a grasp of
the big picture and the objective understanding of why an action is right or why an action is wrong?

ba:

Maybe it helps to define the word com-passion.

Let's break it down into syllabals.

passion is an intensity of feeling (love or suffering)

the prefix 'com' I'm assuming means 'to bring together' as in com-munity, com-pact, com-mittee.
etc.

When an individual brings together understanding of suffering; WITH the love of God which is part of all souls - since all souls are made in the spiritual image of God, a difference can be made in a situation that brought an individual(s) to the wrong action.

We don't condone the wrong action, we do what is appropriate to explain to an individual their wrong and why it is wrong and that they do have to
pay some penalty for their wrong idea; but WITH
COMPASSION, it's not just about correcting the individuals over and over...but to FIX the problem that brings these wrong actions.

Simple analogy to above def... (Below threshold)
ba:

Simple analogy to above definition of a conservative person of compassion in thier soul.

A good parent, seeing their 2 year old toddler reaching for a book of matches carelessly left on a table by a guest; will quickly move in to lightly pat the toddlers hand with a firm NO! BUT
the parent, the one with sound reasoning; understands that while the discipline may have done something, it's not enough. So, the heart moves the good parent to take the matches and put them in the HIGHEST dresser drawer...away from the innocent and curious one's hands. DISCIPLINE to teach 'this is not to be touched' 'this is dangerous' and compassion on the one who can't yet fully understand - to remove that which would entice again.

COMPASSION from the source of GOOD dwelling in a human soul, ACTS...for the COMMON GOOD...

Another analogy: a student falls on the playground because of a pothole in the asphalt. Most of the kids LAUGH...one goes to help the one up...but WITH COMPASSION for even those who laugh, goes to the principal to report the hole and that it should be filled, even temporarily with dirt...
