This is a hair off topic but...

I'm having a little trouble locating the Democratic 'mandate' in Congress. Am I looking at the wrong numbers or do they have 49 seats, the R's 49 seats, and two I's...one for killing terrorists, and one for terrorists killing us.

49 to 49 or 50/50 is now a 'mandate'? Someone take a moment and track the Dem's use of 'mandate' so that next time there's a close race won by a Republican it can be thrown in their face in a timely fashion.

Unless I got all confused by the Allen/Webb stuff and they actually got 50 seats to 48...cuz that would be an 'overwhelming mandate' for sure.

Schumer will be one nightmarish adversary over the next several years. He's running the DSCC again in 2008. Based on his performance this cycle, the GOP should be VERY concerned.

Plus, he has announced that conservative judges are persona non grata for the next two years. I think he will make that stick.

What also worries me is his grand strategy for a permanent Democratic majority. If any Dem can pull this off, its Schumer.

Schumer would have been crazy not to fight to keep his position at DSCC. This year was the toughest cycle for Democrats in several years, and he led them to victory. They are almost certain to gain further seats in 2008, when there will be 21 Republican-held seats up against only 12 Democrats, and possibly also in 2010, when we defend 19 to their 15.

The best hope for Republicans to grab back the Senate comes in 2012, when Democrats will have 24 of the 33 seats up for reelection.

Schumer did a great job and deserves full credit for it. He also gets a nod for giving that loser Kerry a swiftboat kick in the pants.

That's just like the Kerry we've come to know and loathe....trying to get in the "lime light" and claim he did something when everyone knows that he either didn't do it and screwed up so badly that he nearly lost it for everyone. What a jerk. My question is why the people of MA keep voting for these well documented idiots like Kerry and Kennedy.

Chuckie does deserve props for winning the Senate a couple of weeks ago, but I think that circumstances beyond his control are going to keep him from coming out smelling like a rose in 2008. However, knocking Kerry out of the leadership picture was a good idea. Schumer is a lot smarter than I thought he was.
Keeping all donkeys in line for the next 18 months, especially in the House, is going to seem like herding cats. They will expose their own incoherencies and the good guys will rebound.
Hopefully the freshman senators and congressmen in the class of 2008 will be those who wish sincerely to reform government and win the war in Iraq.
