The haecceity of majority

During the first Spring Training for the expansion New York Mets in 1962, Manager Casey Stengel famously asked, "Can't anybody here play this game?"

One begins to wonder about the Democratic Majority in the House of Representatives. Already, their behavior borders on chaos - and they haven't even taken the reins of power yet. Charlotte Raab reports for AFP:

Infighting among US Democrats after their victory in the November 7 elections has led some to wonder if the party is up to the task of controlling Congress.

The first week of legislative work since the elections brought a personal defeat to incoming speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, who will become the first woman to be number three in the constitutional line of succession -- behind the president and the vice president.

While trying unsuccessfully to impose a close ally as her right-hand man, she gave her followers reason to doubt her political skills.

"Nancy Pelosi has managed to severely scar her leadership even before taking up the gavel as the new speaker of the House," The New York Times commented in an editorial. "The new majority -- led by a presumably wiser speaker -- must realize by now that intramural vendetta is hardly a substitute for productive government."

Read the rest at the link above.

It's okay, though. Steny Hoyer says he's not afraid of reprisals - but seeks assurances from Pelosi anyway.

Meanwhile, one incoming Committee Chairman sees the election as a mandate to return to the military draft. Henry Miller remembers the antics of two others, and is not encouraged.

Any day now, the electorate is going to wake and realize, "We did WHAT?"

Scrapiron:

Peeeloshi just shot down Rangel's draft proposal.

The funny dim's on Hot Air are complaining the the republicans are supposed to listen to the military. Not in regards to Deaf & Dum Rangel and Mad Jack Murtha. Vets they may be, military patroits they are not. Bad news for the nut on Hot Air, Hanoi John claims to be Vet but his actions don't show it, and no one in the military respects him. Put Rangel and Murtha in the same class. All three are "what you get when you have a draft", idiots that never adapt. After they got out of the military they were too stupid to do anything else so they became career politicians.

Keep it coming boys and girls. The world needs more comedy. It's proving to be more fun losing than winning with this bunch getting elected.

Charles Rangel, unlike Duby... (Below threshold)
Lurking Observer:

Charles Rangel, unlike Dubya and Dick Cheney, actually served in the US military.

So, if a military vet says that we need to reinstitute a draft, shouldn't we be taking that assessment seriously?

And who is Nancy Pelosi, who has never served a day in uniform, to deny a veteran (a combat veteran, at that) the opportunity to voice an important position regarding real wars and the real military?

Indeed, as we were reminded by Lee and others, many Democrats served, Democrats are no chickenhawks, Democrats understand the real needs of the military. One cannot help but conclude, then, that the Democrats, backed by Rangel, support bringing back the draft.

No wonder you guys lost both the war in Iraq and the election. You can't think your way out of a paper bag.

Lurking Observer:

So, Charlie Rangel, a ranking Democratic Congressman and combat veteran proposes for the second time that there should be a draft, but Lee tells us that it's stupid to believe him?

No wonder the Left also believes that we can negotiate with North Korea and believe the mullahs when they say they aren't interested in nukes.

I'm curious: When should we believe what a Democrat has to say?

Scrapiron:

If Lee has any children, brother or sisters he had better be preparing them for military service or desertion to Canada and beyond. There is always hope another Dimmy Carter will come along with a pardon instead of a firing squad.

This election is really fun. All they won with their votes is the draft, a massive tax increase and the chance to wash their hands in the blood of Iraqi's by the millions.
