Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi has announced that Rep. Alcee Hastings, Jr. will not be appointed Chairman of the House Select Intelligence Committee. Thomas Ferraro reports for Reuters
The incoming leader of the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected a bid by a lawmaker earlier ousted as a federal judge on corruption charges to head a congressional panel that helps protect America's security.
Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi, preparing her party to take control of the House from President George W. Bush's Republicans when the 110th U.S. Congress convenes on January 4, told Rep. Alcee Hastings, a Florida Democrat, of her decision during a closed-door meeting."I advised him that I would select someone else as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee," Pelosi said.
Aides said Pelosi has yet to pick anyone else for the job.
Read the whole story at the link above. Pelosi has had a running feud with the Committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Jane Harmon, and had been widely rumored to be favoring Hastings for the Chairmanship of the sensitive committee. He was publicly backed by the Congressional Black Caucus, but his questionable ethical background gave rise to opposition to him as Chairman on both sides of the aisle.

How to make your Party appear to be Moderate when it isn't:
Nominate totally unacceptable people to high-ranking positions.
Defeat them in a secret ballot or make them withdraw.
Install more unworthy but less well-known people in their place.
Receive applause from those who should know better.
Or do as we do in Wisconsin. The state bureaucracy has proposed a completely unreasonable 46% hike in auto registration fees. The governor will pretend to be reasonable and moderate by making the increase 'only 10%. Maybe 15%.'
