2008: Romney is in!

If there are any current or former elected officials out there who do NOT intend to run for President in 2008, drop me a line.

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has announced the formation of an "exploratory committee," one step toward a full-fledged campaign. If there has ever been a candidate with an "exploratory committee" who didn't end up running, he's a rare and flightless bird.

Romney will be one of the three early frontrunners for the Republican nomination along with Senator John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani. Glen Johnson of the Associated Press filed a full report on Romney's entry into the race.

For those who think Rudy has a chance in the Republican Party, read today's news about his plans that were leaked to the NY Daily News. Pay particular attention to his self-professed vulnerabilites, including the loss of prominent and potential financial backers, chiefly to McCain.

Combine that with the following report out today:

" U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona is methodically building a 2008 presidential campaign machine in South Carolina that includes a cast of top-drawer Republican officials who supported President Bush six years ago.

The McCain campaign is expected to announce its state finance committee this week. Political sources say it will include several prominent Republican businessmen who backed Bush over McCain last time...."

After the 2000 primaries, where he essentially ran a guerilla campaign, McCain has assiduously built a national organization and fund-raising group to run a more winning campaign. Coupled with his name recognition, his coservative appeal compared to other candidates, his military background, and a favorable primary calendar, he is the best-positioned contender, and will wrap up the nomination by end of February 2008.

Isn't it fabulous that this is what the Republican party has come to? He's not always as liberal as the other guys!

Great.
