Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney fired a loud shot across the bows of his potential rivals for the 2008 Republican nomination yesterday, raising over $6.5 million in the one-day event which featured some of the GOP's top national fundraisers. In a cycle when pundits have been saying a candidate must raise $10 million by mid-2007 to be considered viable, Romney makes a very strong statement about the depth of his support among Republicans willing to say it with cash. Hugh Hewitt has the details:
-Amount Raised: over $6.5 million
-Calls Made: approximately 15,000 outbound calls
-Volunteer Fundraisers Participating: nearly 400
- Volunteer fundraisers hailed from more than 40 state
-Telephones: nearly 400
-Laptop computers: 320
-Call center area: 37,800 square feet
-42 call centers, each manned by 9 volunteer fundraisers

Romney's success probably puts most pressure on Rudy Guiliani and Sam Brownback. Guiliani will need to decide to make his run official soon, before all the key money people have signed on with Romney and McCain. Brownback is also seeing much of the conservative campaign machine he would depend upon signing up with either McCain or Romney.
