John Edwards ran for the 2004 Democratic nomination as a nice guy with great hair. Not this time around. He's used some of that super-hold hair spray on his spine and is ready to stand up to his rivals, as his recent interview with The Politico showed:
In 2004, John Edwards rarely had an unkind word to say about his rivals for the presidency. But it isn't 2004 any more.
Should Hillary Clinton apologize for backing the Iraq war? "That is a moral decision she has to make," Edwards told me.Is George Bush a "good man in difficult circumstances trying to do the right thing?" No, Edwards said. He is not.
That nonbinding resolution against the Iraq troop surge favored by Barack Obama? "Useless," said Edwards. "Exactly like a child standing in the corner and stomping his feet."
Success teaches little; failure is a wonderful instructor. And Edwards has learned a lot from running and losing last time around.

There are "Two Americas," all right: those who are dumb enough to fall for hucksters like Edwards, and those who are not. That it should even be close is a damning indictment of the public schools.

I think Edwards was actually running for VP last time, which is why he did not have anything negative to say - and if he somehow got lucky (say Kerry imploded like Dean did) then he would have no enemies.
This is his last shot - and he has to go hardball.
Did he apologize for voting for the Iraq war?

Edwards has indeed apologized for his Iraq AUMF vote, although he has also long claimed deception in the information provided to Congress (it was, of course, the same info the Administration had).
Steve's point about Edwards' intent in 2004 could be on the money, especially considering his lack of experience at the time. It would have been a more logical ambition for him.
Of course, as Lorie Byrd pointed out the other day, he now faults his own "lack of experience" in 2004, but hasn't done anything since then to gain any more experience. All he's been doing is running for President - unless you believe he really wanted to take three dozen or so "vacation trips" to Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina (we bear the stain of being his birthplace, but he only comes back when he wants something).
Biden is catching flack for his remark about Obama, but in the same interview he also noted the party's failure in 2000 and 2004 with "blow-dry" candidates, which I took more as a slap against Edwards than against Gore and Kerry. Gore, in fact, appeared to me to be over-moussed, if anything . . .
