would you prefer liberal republicans? republicans are the ones who have draped themselves in the flag of conservatism. don't kid yourself. george h w bush raised taxes- does that make him a liberal democrat? by your logic, apparently yes.
would you pay a higher tax to support war?

Well, if "Most Pennsylvanians would pay only a little more and get a lot in exchange," then - if my math is correct - SOME Pennsylvanians will have to pay LOTS more and get little or nothing in exchange.
Rendell's description of the various new taxes and offsets reads a bit like a description of the old "Shell Game," but in the end the Sucker always loses no matter how many peas are used.
Government redistributes wealth. In order to create new wealth, private markets need capital. The more wealth seized and redistributed, the less available fuel for the economic engine.
Naturally, there are some things governments have to do because there is no market mechanism to supply the needs. Roads, bridges, water treatment, and the like come to mind immediately, and we have committed ourselves to a base level of benefits for the needy, so some money must be withdrawn from the free market to meet those needs. But, governments always tend to spend more than necessary. Sometimes it is due to defects in procurement, sometimes it is the inefficiencies of cronyism and nepotism, and sometimes it is because governments spend money on things they ought not.
I'm glad I don't live in Pennsylvania right now. I think "Fast Eddie" is about to put it to them.

A person can't be sincere as one who is not a Liberal and vote for the DNC (any candidate, whatever). The Party Platform is a Liberal one.
If someone's "moderate" and still says they're a Democrat, that means they're far Left of a Liberal Republican.
My views on that...and why I could no more vote for a Democrat than I could litter.
