Amidst the din of defeatism on the House floor during the Surrender Resolution debate, one voice rang out clearly in defense of our troops in harm's way: that of Rep. Sam Johnson, retired Colonel and long-term POW in Vietnam. At Let Freedom Ring, Gary Gross introduces it with:
I've chastised John Murtha for his repeated attempts to unilaterally defeat the U.S. military in which he once served. I've chastised him because he deserved it for his willingness to compromise his principles for a few fleeting moments of publicity. As much as I'm capable of criticizing Murtha's deplorable behavior more, I'm choosing instead to get out of the way and let Rep. Sam Johnson's words stand in contrast to John Murtha's defeatist attitude.
Read it all, including the full text of Rep. Johnson's remarks, at the link above. Here is an excerpt from those remarks:
So, little did I know back in my rat-infested 3 x 8 dark and filthy cell that 34 years after my departure from Hell on Earth...I would spend the anniversary of my release pleading for a House panel to back my measure to support and fully fund the troops in harm's way....and that just days later I would be on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives surrounded by distinguished veterans urging Congress to support our troops to the hilt.
We POWs were still in Vietnam when Washington cut the funding for Vietnam. I know what it does to morale and mission success. Words can not fully describe the horrendous damage of the anti-American efforts against the war back home to the guys on the ground. Our captors would blare nasty recordings over the loud speaker of Americans protesting back home...tales of Americans spitting on Vietnam veterans when they came home... and worse.
We must never, ever let that happen again.
The pain inflicted by your country's indifference is tenfold that inflicted by your ruthless captors.
Our troops, and their families, want, need and deserve the full support of the country, and the Congress. Moms and dads watching the news need to know that the Congress will not leave their sons and daughters in harm's way without support.
You said a mouthful, Colonel.
The Power Line chaps have unearthed the video:
Congress may do its will. No surprise there - as Mark Twain once said, "Suppose I were an idiot, and suppose also I were a member of Congress. But, I repeat myself."
God forbid, in the name of honorable men like Rep. Johnson, that we become a nation of cheese-eating surrender monkeys.

Jim, I'm praying that the RNC & the NRCC make ads out of this video. Imagine the impact that that ad would have playing Murtha's online interview against the backdrop of Johnson's speech.
I've stated this often: America is upset with the Iraq War because we aren't making enough progress. That doesn't mean that they're anti-victory.
As I said here, I believe that the Dems are in the process of overplaying their hands.

Without doubt, a significant number of those voicing dissatisfaction with the Iraq War in polls are doing so because they would prefer a MORE aggressive approach, not because they favor a withdrawal without accomplishing minimal goals.
But, even if this were not true, it would not matter. In the summer of 1864 public dissatisfaction with the War had grown so universal that Lincoln's defeat by McClellan was widely expected. Had Sherman not taken Atlanta when he did, the course of our history might have changed drastically - McClellan viewed the whole thing as a "quagmire" and would have immediately sued for peace to "bring the boys home safely."
Had Tom Dewey been willing to abandon bipartisan foreign policy in 1944, he might have tapped into broad public dismay at the "quagmire" in Europe, let alone the bloody cost of incremental progress in the Pacific, and painted FDR as a dying man following a dying plan. Back then, though, they didn't disregard the "loyal" in "Loyal Opposition."
No matter how many people believe something, if it is wrong, it's wrong.

I would like to see this heroic man go toe-to-toe with Okinawa Jack Murtha on a Sunday or prime time news show. I bet Murtha would cut and run and refuse to appear.
I hope the GOP makes Johnson a spokesman and gives him more face time.

Murtha has doomed himself to the garbage heap when history is written. A once proud american is now a mass of stupidity, or suffering from mental illness. Either way his footnote in history will show him as a traitor to his country and the United States Military. I"d like to tell the SOB that to his face as I know he never see's the emails sent to his office. His cowardly wimps hide and destroy them.

For the last 5 years the "rubberstamped congress" has been in charge, and not enough body armor, Humvees and other vehicles not equipped with armor, lousey conditions for the wounded, (new scandle about that), and you call this supporting the troops?
Does make you wonder why any Republican would accuse someone else of not supporting the troops. Is it because of their own poor record of supporting the troops?

So where is the "chicken-hawk" rebuttal from the left? Opps, guess it won't work here, will it?
So when Republicans by the millions believe and state "Our troops, and their families, want, need and deserve the full support of the country, and the Congress. Moms and dads watching the news need to know that the Congress will not leave their sons and daughters in harm's way without support." - those who have not served are dismissed as war-mongering, chicken hawks.
The RNC, HAS to use this in advertisements down the road.
