The 2008 nomination contests are heating up. Fresh from the dust-up over David Geffen's attack on Hillary Clinton and Obama's refusal to disavow it (and simultaneously playing the "race card"), we see the Republican side getting down and dirty, too. Obama's criticism of Hillary had to do with South Carolina State Senator Robert Ford's remark that Obama would "take down the Democratic ticket," and the first dirty salvos on the Republican side are also from the Palmetto State, as reported by Aaron Gould Sheinin of The State:
A second piece was sent via electronic mail from the address "upstaterepublican@gmail.com." It said it was from "Martin W." and attacked Romney's faith.
The e-mail is headlined: "Mitt Romney has a family secret he doesn't want you to know."It says: "Those dark suspicions you hide deep inside yourself about Mormonism are trying to tell you something. Trust your instincts! æ.æ.æ. The light of truth will burn through the smoke and mirrors of Mitt Romney's movie star looks and crafty words!"
Read the whole article at the link above. McCain state campaign manager Trey Walker has been linked to such anonymous "hit" emails in a previous state campaign, and has not responded to media inquiries on this one. The McCain campaign officially condemns the tactic, of course, but South Carolinians recall that, despite the myth that McCain was the victim of opposition smears in the 2000 campaign (a one-day, < 200 call "push poll" by three individuals unconnected with any campaign did attempt to accuse him of fathering a biracial child out of wedlock, an effort immediately condemned by the Bush people), he lost that primary in the final debate when Bush produced negative McCain flyers after McCain denied their existence.
Trey Walker needs to come forward and answer questions about this email smear project.
Spartanburg County Republicans will hold a Presidential Straw Poll at their meeting tonight. Spartanburg is an upstate county which is one of the strongholds of conservative Christian Republicans in the state.

Someone should read the LDS Articles of Faith. They are not very controversial. And I think this economic conservative, Romney, is a good foil to the evangelistic protestant right. Either of those varieties of theocracy are preferable to sharia, if anyone bothered to think about it.
