Is John Edwards running on empty, with fundraising running behind schedule and a serious "buzz deficit" among Democratic contenders? It looks that way, writes Patrick Ruffini over at Hugh Hewitt:
Edwards is also garnering a lot of his publicity by grasping desperately at headlines, be it Ann Coulter's outburst or the Fox News Nevada debate. (This is borne out by his Alexa numbers.) He is not making news of his own. The last time the story was about him was the Marcotte/McEwan fiasco. Not good.
Obama is stealing Edwards' oxygen. Breck is no longer the sunny optimist in the race.
Read the rest at the link above. I'm not sure Edwards, with all his "Two Americas" talk, was ever the "sunny optimist," but there is certainly grounds for pessimism in his campaign.
For instance, check out the polls at Real Clear Politics. Edwards' rolling poll average is only 11.7%, and he has cracked 15% only once since last fall - with 16% in a small-sample Cook/RTS poll in February. Compare this to Hillary's steady support of 35%+ and Obama's steady rise to second place, and the outlook is pretty bleak for the Boy Who Would Be The Prettiest President.
Apparently the Presidency is about more than good hair and teeth, even on the Democratic side.

Actually, Edwards seems to me to be the only Democratic candidate right now who actually seems to have substance to back up his style. He has a health care plan and has recently been more strongly against the war than Obama or Clinton. This far in advance of the primaries, it seems unwise to write the candidate who's laying low off. Also, I don't think he was "grasping desperately" at the Coulter debacle; he handled it pretty well.

Well, if Edwards is floundering that's a real shame...he is the one candidate who has made poverty a central concern of his campaign and he is the only candidate to provide a comprehensive healthcare plan.

Edwards has all the substance of a Barbara Cartland novel. And his conclusion that Jesus would be dissapointed with the greed in American society is amusing, to say the least, coming from a blown-dry weasel trial lawyer. His inability to get any traction in the primaries is the first sign of intelligence out of the Democrats since the days of Scoop Jackson and Hubert Humphrey. No loss for America.

I am going to say that John Edwads is going to do 15 million times better than George W. Bush for running the country and foreign affairs. However, 15 thousand times better is still pretty good considering how faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar behind a rating Bush would get.

Edwards out of the race? I sure hope not. He's the only one with a health care plan.
And how can you be "done" so far out? Gimme a break. No one's dropping out nine months before the first vote.

At least some of the Edwards folks are on the same page, but they should really READ his health care plan. If they would take an introductory course in economics, too, they might avoid embarrassment.
I didn't say he was about to withdraw. I said he is on the ropes. Money is getting harder to come by, and he has a solid 15% ceiling in the national polls. The RCP average of recent polls in Iowa, his "make-or-break" state ("native" South Carolinian or not, he is running a weak third here now), shows him behind Hillary for the first time - although without the latest ARG poll, he would still hold a slight lead.
The question will soon become whether he is willing to emulate Kerry in 2003 and spend some of his own money. He doesn't have the resources Kerry did/does, so I suspect he won't blow the stock account on running for President.
You can make believe all you wish, but things don't look good for Edwards.

Kucinich has a healthcare plan. Kucinich has the best platform of any candidate on all of the hot issues right now, and then some. What he doesn't have is the rock-star coverage the media is affording Clinton and Obama. Read what the man has to say - he's worth listening to.

Pretty bleak for Democrats, you mean. Looks like the media and the party's PTB are succeeding at pushing through their favored candidates. Let's just give Hillary the nomination already and make way for President Giuliani.
