2007 Louisiana Governor Race

According to a new Southern Media Poll, Congressman Bobby Jindal leads former Senator John Breaux in a potential match-up. Jindal would, like Senator David Vitter, avoid a runoff by beating Breaux 55% to 27%. Of course, Jindal should not take too much comfort in these numbers, given that the Democrats will attack him viciously on the Iraq War to prevent the focus being on the terrible Democratic mismanagement in Louisiana during Katrina.

Surprising numbers, given B... (Below threshold)

Surprising numbers, given Breaux's long-standing popularity and electoral success in the state.

Breaux can expect problems, though, about his residency. Louisiana law requires the Governor to be have five years of continuous residency in the state, and Breaux moved his legal residence after leaving the Senate. He's now a Washington lobbyist (as are, it seems, most living former members of Congress).

Even if Louisiana Democrats could win a court battle over the requirement, the controversy would damage Breaux severely.

Jindal lost only narrowly to Blanco the last time, and his reputation has only been polished since, while Democrats have lost a significant number of votes in the displaced population of New Orleans (which came largely from predominantly Democratic precincts). If anyone can beat him this year, it should be considered a huge upset.
