Just before the first quarterly FEC reports are due, Senator John McCain is trying to lower expectations for his own fundraising - which means it will come in lower than anyone has thought it could. From the Associated Press:
"We started late, our money-raising, and we're going to pay a price for it because we got off to a late start," McCain said. McCain's admission is surprising for a top-tier GOP candidate.
Rivals have been rallying to show they have the millions for a presidential bid. Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been holding fund-raisers around the country, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney raised $6.5 million in a single day in January.
Read the whole story at the link above. This could be one more nail in what has been a foundering first quarter for the McCain campaign. Losing support in the polls is one thing, since polls this early can be easily dismissed, but failing to raise top-tier money can't be hidden.
Does ANYONE buy the lame "We started late" excuse? Hasn't McCain been actively seeking this nomination ever since 2000? If he can't raise money now, when he is still one of the frontrunners, how will he fare if Romney or Thompson gain traction?
The "Straight Talk Express" could be headed over a cliff very soon.
