McCain is actually making his formal "announcement" in five different states, including South Carolina, today. That's great, because we don't have newspapers or TV or the interweb thing to find out what happens elsewhere, ya know!
Not to pick on McCain for this, because it's a farce they all seem to enjoy putting on. The absolute all-time kicker of an "announcement announcement" had to be Chuck Hagel's ballyhooed presser in Lincoln, when he stirred up half the national press corps to fly out to Nebraska to hear Hagel announce . . . that he had nothing to announce one way or the other!
That one deserves some sort of prize.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The poll showing McCain on top in SC is a Zogby two-nighter of 512 total respondents and a margin of error of ± 4.5%. It gives McCain 22% to Rudy's 19%, well within the margin, and declined support for both since the last "real" poll showed Rudy leading 26%-25%, also within the MOE.
Remember, though, that McCain won 42% of the SC GOP primary vote in 2000. Looks like his level of support has slipped by about half . . . actually, much of his vote last time was from crossover Democrats looking to give Bush a black eye (SC Democrats held caucuses to save money in 2000, since their nomination wasn't seriously contested, and we have no party registration). Those folks will probably be more interested in the Hillary-Obama-Edwards fight this cycle.
You also forget to announce a new poll from Ayers-McHenry that shows McCain leading Giuliani by 9 in SC.
McCain 24%
Giuliani 15%
Romney 10%
