With so many more Senate seats at stake next year, Republicans are almost certain to lose ground in that body, but could they possibly win back the House of Representatives? In today's Washington Post, George Will opines:
Tom Cole earned a PhD in British history from the University of Oklahoma, intending to become a college professor, but he came to his senses and to a zest for politics, and now, in just his third term in the House of Representatives, he is chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. As such, he is charged with recruiting the candidates and honing the tactics that will transform Speaker Nancy Pelosi back into House minority leader. "We are looking," says Cole, speaking unminced words about the Republican Party, "like a beaten-down stock." Nevertheless, he is sanguine regarding 2008: "The positioning is good for us" because "we don't have to conquer new territory, we have to reclaim old territory."
That is, 61 Democrats represent districts that George W. Bush carried in 2004. A 16-seat gain in 2008 would restore Republican control to the House.
Read it all at the link above. The House is narrowly divided, and Nancy Pelosi is driving it to the left just as fast as she can - the opposite direction of the trend in Americans' thinking. The difference, despite all trends and demographic analyses, will be the public attitude toward the Iraq War. Events on the ground may influence that attitude; whatever it is will win.
It's that simple.

Jim,
I think you are correct about how Iraq goes will influence the seats up for grab. However, with all the recent news about the oversight committees doing their job, and the possible scandle's coming to the forefront, who knows.
All parties, a year or two before elections do their best to dig up dirt on the other party. It got real dirty when Gore was running, and now the Demo's are just doing the same thing. It worked back then and it most likely will work now.
I just wished we could elect honest people, who will not let the system corrupt them, in office and start working for the majority of the American taxpayers. It doesn't matter what party they belong to, just be honest and work for America.
