Zogby International's telephone poll (NOT the "interactive" online version) shows a virtual dead heat in both parties.
John Edwards stays in front on the Democratic side with 26%, ahead of Hillary Clinton's 24% and Barack Obama's 22%, a statistical tie in a poll with a margin of error of ± 4.4%. The next nearest competitor is Bill Richardson with 6%, while 16% remain undecided.
Mitt Romney has surged from third place to the lead, although with 19% against 18% each for Giuliani and McCain, whose support remained fairly stable. Fred Thompson draws 9% support, while 22% remain undecided.

Iowa caucus-goers are a breed apart, of course. Only the most dedicated partisans on both sides are willing to brave an Iowa January night to spend 3-4 hours in a poorly-heated room hearing speeches and taking repeated votes, yet they have a decided influence on the political system. Iowa put Jimmy Carter on the map, and elevated George H.W. Bush to the designated challenger to Ronald Reagan. Bob Dole became a player in 1988, and sealed the deal in 1996 in Iowa. Howard Dean's dream ended in a third place scream, while Dick Gephardt's political career ended in a fourth place finish in 2004 (after he won them in 1988). This year is the most hotly contested on both sides in years, and will have an undue influence on the nominations of both parties.
They probably won't be decisive; they rarely are. However, the winners will be in a great position going into New Hampshire and South Carolina, and a breakout performance by any candidate could dramatically alter the race in his/her party.

Well since the Pubs have caved on this horrid, Bush-Kyl-Reid-Kennedy compromise bill on illegal immigration, McCain is done. Now it will be up to Newt,Fred,Mitt,Rudy to make statements about this bill . Bush has lost the '08 election for the BASE unless we can stop the amnesty vote on Mon. night. NumbersUSA.com is a place to go to fax Senators and especially Pub ones. We need 41 votes to block amnesty. I am so shocked that Kyl did this since he really is a conservative. Why the Pubs feel, think that to cave in will help the nation as well as the Party's chances in '08 is beyond me. It is an insane bill.
