Fred Thompson getting good press

One advantage of not being a formally announced candidate is that you tend to get more favorable press treatment. Mark Halperin has a really nice profile of Fred Thompson in Time. If Thompson announces in the next month or so as many suspect, it will be interesting to see how the media coverage changes -- or doesn't change.

Of all the Republicans, Tho... (Below threshold)

Of all the Republicans, Thompson is the most likely to get the most favorable press coverage. This is because of his charming and disarming manner, and that he engages them directly. No fear in the eyes = no blood in the water for the sharks.

If he gets in, coverage will harshen, to be sure. He IS a Republican, after all.

Romney has a similar manner, but is handicapped by his Mormon faith. Reporters as a group these days tend to be non-religious and mistrustful of people of faith in general. Less common sects like the LDS are treated with special suspicion.

Giuliani scares the heck out of them. Any favorable press he gets is due to fear, not love.

McCain is also moving towards scaring them, in a switch from his 2000 run, when he was their precious darling.

Gingrich might as well have two heads, with blood dripping from both maws. He can make nice on cable news all he wants: when it comes down to it, they will be rerunning the Clinton black & white commercial from 1995/96.
