Michelle Obama resigned her seat on the Board of Directors of TreeHouse Foods after controversy arose over her employment with a major Wal-Mart supplier while her husband, Sen. Barack Obama, criticizes the major retailer on labor issues. Deanna Bellandi of the Associated Press has the story:
TreeHouse Foods said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that her resignation from the position she has held since 2005 was not due to any disagreement with the company. Last year she earned $51,200 in fees from the company, according to the couple's 2006 tax returns.
"As my campaign commitments continue to ramp up, it is becoming more difficult for me to provide the type of focus I would like on my professional responsibilities," Michelle Obama said in a written statement.An administrator at the University of Chicago Hospitals, she has significantly curtailed her work hours to campaign for her husband.
Read the whole story at the above link. As a hospital administrator, she was named to the Board of a food company? And this happened in 2005, the same year her husband began serving in the Senate?
The real story here isn't hypocrisy in taking money from companies doing business with Wal-Mart while you trash the big "W," it's that someone completely unqualified by experience is getting on a corporate board because her husband won a federal office.
