Senator Hillary Clinton is maintaining her lead among Democrats, staying just under the "magic" 40% level of support thought to guarantee success in a multi-candidate field. From the latest Rasmussen Reports:
Clinton is supported by 37% of voters in this week's poll, up three points from last week. She has been within three points of the 35% level in fifteen of the last 16 weekly updates.
Illinois Senator Barack Obama is at 25% this week--the fifth time in six weeks he has been at 25% or 26%.Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards slipped a few points to 11%, his lowest total since mid-February.
Among all voters, Edwards is viewed favorably by 52%, Obama by 50%, and Clinton by 47%.
Read the full report at the above link. Former Senator John Edwards' support seems to be returning to the levels of early this year, before the recurrence of his wife's cancer won him a slight sympathy bounce in most polls.
It's not impossible to win the nomination from a distant third place seven months before the first contest - Senator John Kerry did it in the last cycle, former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis did it in the 1988 primaries, and Jimmy Carter was a mere blip in the polls until his 2nd place finish (behind "Uncommitted") in Iowa put him on the map in 1976. However, none of those faced a candidate with such a strong and experienced organization and as well-financed as Mrs. Clinton is this year.
Oddly enough, even as his prospects fade in the Democratic race, Edwards runs the strongest against all the main Republican contenders. Go figure.

Rasmussen also had Fred and Rudy almost tied or tied and then that same poll had both of them defeating any Dem. Now that is what is really interesting. A general election winner could be Rudy-Fred, or Fred-Mitt or some other mish mosh of these 3. My guess is that polls will show that by Jan. '08, one of these guys will be on top of the ticket and they will be still ahead of Hil. Unless of course, the Bush Presidency drags all our candidates down via the Illegal Immigration bill that he stubbornly kow tows for.
