Just when you thought celebrities had topped out at demonstrating their utter cluelessness, Paul Simon has begun campaigning for Senator Chris Dodd. Amy Lorentzen reports for the Associated Press:
Grammy-award winning singer and songwriter Paul Simon joined longtime friend and Democratic presidential hopeful Chris Dodd at campaign appearances across Iowa on Friday, saying the political process is too focused on money and not issues.
Simon said he watched a recent Democratic debate in New Hampshire and felt the most serious questions weren't directed toward the candidates with the most expertise, including Dodd, a friend for about a quarter-century."The (political) process is not really eliciting the best thinking because it's focused on how much money is raised and it's difficult to come around the media and speak to people ..." he said.
Read the rest at the link above. Unfortunately, it doesn't include any examples of Simon's "best thinking." Surely, appearing with Dodd isn't his best work - although it could replace appearing in a chicken suit on Saturday Night Live as the low point of his career.
Gee, whoever thought Art Garfunkel would turn out to be the sensible one? (Okay, okay, that was gratuitous, and I apologize. For all I know, Garfunkel might be supporting some true moron like Kucinich or Ron Paul, in which case Simon looks better again).

It is time for both parties... (Below threshold)1. Posted by Glenn Koons | July 6, 2007 2:10 PM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast)
It is time for both parties to suggest to the lower tiers of both, to drop out of this Presidential race. People are wasting time, money, and their ears to silliness, inanity and policy wonk statements that become either just accusations, curse, lies and propaganda. Both parties need the serious people to stand out and let the other loons, nuts, and arrogant demagogues like Dennis, Gravel, Paul go home to their own homes and districts. Frankly, none of the Dem characters are very serious about the very serious issues or questions the USA faces. Not on the WOT, not on Islamofascism, not on SCOTUS appointments, not on SS and Medicare reform , not on permanent tax cuts. The top 3 Pubs with all their warts are serious on these issues. Even Hunter and St. John are but they are not going to win so out they go too. Let us get to the nominees with a real chance and let the American likely voter start to be serious with these serious issues. Not just emotive feelings , investigations, hate Bush speeches, but what will be done on these issues. So far, only the top 3 Pub guys have given any idea of what they stand for. As to Dodd, Biden, Tancredo, Paul, Gravel, Dennis the K, good heavens, begone.

I wholeheartedly concur, except that I think McCain has earned the right to say when his campaign is over.
Unofficial GOP tradition has strongly favored the "next guy in line" since 1960, with Goldwater in 1964 being the sole exception (Bush in 2000 had established a huge early lead). McCain's stature should grant him the final say.
This is not a problem, of course, if we get rid of the candidates who can't beat "Margin of Error" in any major polls. We can have a substantive and useful debate with four serious candidates.
After all, the Democrats haven't found their first serious candidate yet.
