Mitt Romney will undoubtedly lead all Republicans in second quarter spending when everyone's full reports are filed. Jeremy Pelofsky has the story for Reuters:
Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney spent almost $20.5 million in the second quarter on his campaign, nearly double the party front-runner Rudy Giuliani, according to election filings made public on Friday.
Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and a wealthy investment banker, has trailed in opinion polls but has been gaining some steam after spending heavily on advertising in New Hampshire and Iowa, which hold early contests for the party's nomination. He ended the second quarter with more than $12.1 million on hand after raising $14 million and giving himself a $6.5 million loan. Giuliani, the former New York mayor, raised $17.6 million, spent over $11 million and had $18.3 million on hand.
Read the whole story at the link above. It was expected that Romney would be the early spending leader, as he is the least well-known nationally of the major GOP contenders. His total debt of over $9 million isn't a problem, because he owes it all to himself. However, his ability to maintain fundraising at a level which enables him to keep up this rate of spending may be the key to how far he can go.
Giuliani has been touting his stewardship of donated funds and with only $1000 spent on paid media so far, no one can accuse him of being free-spending at this point.
Detailed reports from the other candidates will become available over the next few days.
