After their big Chicago confab, including a forum for Presidential candidates, the AFL-CIO is holding off on endorsing a candidate, reports Jesse J. Holland for the Associated Press:
The decision means that the AFL-CIO's 55 unions -- representing some 10 million workers -- are free to endorse whoever they want. Several unions already have made plans to endorse one of the eight Democratic candidates after Labor Day."It is clear that a number of the Democratic candidates have the experience and the credentials to lead our nation," a statement from the federation's executive council said. "And it is equally clear that our members support a number of the candidates -- union members have told us all the candidates are impressive and they are eager to support many of them. For this reason, the AFL-CIO has decided not to proceed with a decision process that would lead to support for a single candidate at this time."
Read the whole story at the above link. An official endorsement would have required the support of 2/3 of the member unions.
Most remarkable, again, is the failure of John Edwards to make real headway. He has been aggressively courting union support, including bad-mouthing former President Clinton's support of NAFTA and other free trade pacts. He apparently hasn't gained any traction there, or at least not enough to make a difference in his standing in the race.

Boy I am waiting breathlessly for that endorsement. Labor has voted Dem since Gompers and still it has been tax cuts, industrial contracts not the Dem Party which has helped the working man. So ironic that blacks, Hispanics, labor, keep voting like insane people and keep getting the same result: no real Dem aid or policies which actually make American life better. Just once, I would like a gutty Pub to go before all these Dem lefty conventions and present a conserv Pub agenda and see just how the rank and file would react!
