In the wake of his victory at the Ames Straw Poll, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has moved into third in the Republican nomination contest, says the Gallup Poll:
Romney now receives 14% of Republicans' votes when they are asked whom they would like as their party's presidential nominee, up from 8% in each of the two previous Gallup Polls conducted in July and early August. Romney's current positioning puts him slightly behind front-runner Rudy Giuliani and unannounced candidate Fred Thompson, but slightly ahead of John McCain, who slips to 11% in this poll.
Read it all at the above link. Interesting, the poll also found a majority of Republicans are NOT aware of Romney's win in Iowa - reinforcing the notion that only political junkies are paying attention to the races so far.
Giuliani still leads with 32%, followed by Fred Thompson at 19%, Romney, and McCain. Huckabee moves into "margin of error range" at 4%, with the rest of the field attracting no statistically significant support.

It's a decent argument that political junkies are the only ones really paying attention so far. That said, can one make the leap that Romney is continuing to consolidate the GOP political junkie base? I think so... this should bode well for Romney, as word of mouth support, from those viewed by friends and family as "in-touch" w/ politics should strongly influence the rest of the GOP as we approach the primaries.

If Gallup and Rass. and RCP are correct, today's poll has Rudy up to a 13 point lead over the field. That is up not down, 2 points. Perhaps, Fred the fey will jump in finally and then we shall see how the jukies plus the BASE react to that marvy thing. I just want a winner and if Rudy or Fred or Mitt can do it, come on and beat those pacifist socialists!

I like one of them putting on the show, one of them running the show, and one of them rooting around in the Department of Justice.
