Edwards: sacrifice your SUVs

Speaking in Florida, John Edwards calls upon Americans to sacrifice, reports the Associated Press:

The former North Carolina senator told a forum by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday he thinks Americans are willing to sacrifice.

Edwards says Americans should be asked to drive more fuel efficient vehicles. He says he would ask them to give up SUVs.

Sourced at the link above. Nothing says "wartime sacrifice" better than driving a hybrid, apparently.

Notice Edwards doesn't pledge to give up anything himself - not so much as a haircut.

I assume when he says he would "ask" Americans to sacrifice he means he would "force" them to. After all you don't need to be president to ask.

Americans should "sacrifice their SUV's"? On what? A funeral pyre?

Seriously -- how many people can afford to change the car they drive just like that? Will Edwards himself be buying them a new vehicle, a la "Hybrids for Hummers" exchange program?

Now just have to wait for the first pictures to show up of John Edwards' own fleet of private vehicles, and his campaign entourage convoy with Suburbans and Tahoes.

But campaigning turns out to be a pretty high-carbon practice. All the candidates ride around, particularly in Iowa, in big cars -- Hillary rode an 18-wheeler; Obama rented an RV; and Edwards, whose convoy is often mini-van centric, had this Cadillac SRX Crossover (15 mpg) beside him in Iowa on his arrival from announcing his candidacy for president in New Orleans, according to his Flickr stream.

But don't worry about Breck Boy, he buys carbon offsets

Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz says they buy carbon offsets for the vehicles, and adds:

Of course, none of this automotive stuff holds a candle (to choose an unsafe metaphor) to the gas they're all burning with those private jets.

I wonder what level of emissions it takes to heat and cool that 28,000 square foot house of his. And I wonder how many auto workers he'll put on the streets with his (ahem) request of the American people.

edwards' natural progression to nader is the Frank Burns stage which he seems to be stalled on for many years now.
