McCain's Michigan chair to quit

With Michigan's primary moving up to January 15th, this comes at an inopportune time, reports Kathy Barks Hoffman for the Associated Press:

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox plans to resign as John McCain's state campaign chairman, according to two top Republicans who asked not to be identified because Cox has not yet spoken with McCain in person.

State Republicans are set to choose their presidential favorites in a Jan. 15 primary. The two Republicans made the comments about Cox on Monday.

McCain won Michigan's 2000 Republican presidential primary. But polls suggest Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney now are more popular in the state, and Fred Thompson is getting the same amount of support as McCain.

Read it all at the link above. The campaign notes the organization doesn't rise or fall on which politician is named chairman, but it certainly isn't a sign of strength. McCain has already had to scale back efforts in Michigan due to lagging fundraising. But in the end, McCain's chances rest mainly with New Hampshire right now.
