Ag Sec to run for Hagel's Senate seat

Former Nebraska Governor and incumbent Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns will announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Chuck Hagel, Anna Jo Bratton and Mary Clare Jalonick report for the Associated Press:

But state Republicans, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made, said Johanns intends to seek the seat held by retiring Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel.

"Johanns is the 800-pound gorilla," said Rep. Lee Terry, a Nebraska Republican. "People like Mike."

Incumbent Republicans in New Hampshire, Maine, Oregon and Minnesota face difficult challenges, and GOP retirements in Virginia and Colorado give Democrats additional targets. Democrats have also been recruiting former Sen. Bob Kerrey to return home to Nebraska to run for Hagel's seat.

Read it all at the link above. This news will likely keep Bob Kerrey at the New School.

Kerrey will stay at the Hsu... (Below threshold)

Kerrey will stay at the Hsu School talking with FBI agents for the near term, but what's a man with administrative and executive experience doing running for the Senate? Why isn't he running for President?

Oh, next cycle, you say.

Kerrey, you may recall, was... (Below threshold)

Kerrey, you may recall, was the early favorite in the Democratic field in 1992, although the "heavy hitters" like Gore, Gephardt, and Cuomo had opted out early because of GHWB's high poll ratings in 1991. He failed to impress on the stump, ran a generally lackluster campaign, made a lot of unforced errors, and limped through the primaries.

A lot of his attraction in Nebraska was his youth and war service, as well as a moderate political philosophy. After going to the Senate, he began moving left with the party. I don't think he would run a particularly strong race in Nebraska today, and probably wouldn't want to reenter politics at this point in his life.

Well, yes, but I meant Joha... (Below threshold)

Well, yes, but I meant Johanns for President. Bush One's high ratings in '91 also gave an upstart southern governor, who'd lost once already, a chance.
