Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee may be only barely in the "top tier" of Republican candidates, but he was the top contender who showed up in person at the Palmetto Family Values' "stump and straw poll" meeting. That was enough to earn him the win, though, Jim Davenport reports for the Associated Press:
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee appeared in person, saying it was important to be there with voters and talk about the issues important to them.U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter of California also attended the event and vowed to finish a building a fence between the U.S and Mexico, bring back jobs lost to overseas competition and emphasize pro-U.S. lessons in schools.
Rep. Ron Paul of Texas had the most visible support at the event and his supporters cheered louder than others as he spoke by phone. "We can't pretend we are the police of the world," Paul said.
Huckabee won the straw poll with 206 votes.
Paul came in second with 179 votes and Thompson was a distant third at 43 votes.
Read the rest of the story at the link provided. Naturally, this is an utterly meaningless event, and the rest of the frontrunners would have served themselves well by following Rudy's example and skipping it entirely.
Forgive me for mocking the Most Visible Support award given to Ron Paul supporters. Naturally, they stick out like sore thumbs in any gathering of normal people. What are these degenerates doing at a "Palmetto Family Values" meeting anyway? They certainly reject all moral authority.
So what does this "victory" mean for Huckabee's campaign? Unfortunately for him, not much. "PFV" isn't an organization which wields any particular influence among South Carolina Republicans or even its own members. But in his position it still is good to win first place, no matter where the contest. Like Bill Richardson on the Democratic side, he is burnishing his credentials for Vice President to a brilliant sheen.

Can we try empiricism NOW?
I mean, Huck and Paul aren't even using PR firms for media "mentions". It's just that people who Believe Things (straw poll voters) respect others who Believe Things even IF their Things are not the same (but somewhat close).
Example, Huck: Believes the Bible is the inerrant word of God. Even non-church-going Republicans admire generic Christianity and love the Baby Jesus.
Example, Paul: Republican conservatives admire the matchless construction of the US Constitution of which Ron Paul is an EXPERT and fierce defender.
On the other hand: there's the bug-eyed lisper, the lazy, sweaty one, the alien, the Opus Dei guy, and now the Emperor Jones.
Tancredo and Hunter are OK.
Anyway, it's not just Bush we're sick of, it's his stink. And the "Big Four"'s noses are stuck to it, so buh-bye!

Ron Paul supporters "reject all moral authority"? Whose morals are we rejecting? Yours? Do you think the government has a monopoly on morals? If so, I must assume that either you have a warped view of morality or you are painfully ignorant of the truth about our government. Did you know that the government uses our tax money to buy majority shares for Fortune 500 companies? They OWN the media! They can get away with anything (and often do)! Watch America: Freedom to Fascism and educate yourself, please.

Hey Aaron.... after reading Jim's response to your comment, it's pretty obvious who feels their "Moral Authority" has been rejected. I guess the moral of the story is, "Don't through your pearls before swine".

OK, straw polls don't mean "a whole lot". But they do show where the interest is, among the politically motivated.
People are clearly searching for candidiates that are able to stick to their message, and that's why McCain and Romney and Giuliani fare so poorly among live voters. People are tired of spin and lies.

Who wrote this article?? It's awful and full of untruths. If the US government is your example of "moral authority," you're certainly right that I reject it at this point. The House and Senate are full of criminals, the President and Vice-President are liars and degenerates. I would disgrace the Great Mind of the Universe -- God -- if I respected and followed like cattle.
GO RON PAUL! BRING SANITY BACK TO THE U.S.A.!

This article is a waste of time. You clearly don't know anything about the presidential candidates morals. There seems to be a trend by 'you guys.' When Paul does well, all of a sudden the poll is meaningless and doesn't prove anything, while also saying that it shows that Huckabee is 'moving up' and he is showing that he is' VP' material.' I mean, at least construct a real argument! Also, I beg to differ. The people that participate in these events are the people that are going to go to the polls on election day so this is a perfect example of what to expect. Thank you.

Ah, that pearl, like a tiny little moon, just the thinnest little sliver of lunacy. Y'all are gonna make me inform myself about the R. Paul dude. I'm still just a little past the 'why does a cross dressing black entertainer want to be President' stage, and have been amused by bD's touting, lib, lib, libertarian, lib style. But what of Iraq, Islamofascism in general, and 9/11? Any one subtle and complex can comprehend, even expound on, the marvels of the Constitution. What fantasies inform his "Republic".

I'm a homeschooling father of four, and a Christian. I turn out to support Dr Paul (who is also a devout Christian) whenever I can. The "freedom message" has wide support among those who want to return to the liberty experienced during the first 70 years under the Constitution.
Dr Paul's support includes folks from all walks of life, with varied backgrounds. The common thread is that we believe in the rule of law, starting with the Constitution. NO OTHER CANDIDATE presently running supports the repeal of unConstitutional departments, laws, and wars. True Christians will follow the Bible, respecting the rule of law (Rom 13), loving PEACE and hating war. (Or are brown-skinned Iraqi and Iranian civilians not made in the image of God?)
Don't forget that Ron Paul finished second on last week's Values Voter debate, finishing 2nd. (Despite that the voters were hand-picked Repub party delegates, which means primarily neo-con Bush supporters.)
